I am running ME on a GATEWAY 2000 with an EV500 monitor, 64 mb ram, 6 gig hard drive, and an Intel(r) 82810E Graphics controller (no card). About a month ago our color suddenly went very wierd. There appears as though there is a purple cast over everything, but purple is gray. Blue is electric blue, red and yellow both appear to be bright orange and green is very dark blue (almost black). We have tried many things to diagnose and correct the problem. First we tried adjusting the color with the controller options and with the monitors own adjustments (color/temp, DeGausse, etc.). When that did not work we reinstalled drivers for the monitor and the graphics controller (I am missing Silw9x.dll). Then we reinstalled windows completely. Then we put a Packard Bell monitor on the Gateway comp. and it had color problems too. One would think that that rules out it being the monitors problem, but both monitors have a color problem on the Pack Bell too. We are hooking them up to different outlets in different parts of the house, there are no known sources of interference in the area with the comp. We have a 56k modem, so it is not the modem. We took our computer speakers off of the desk in case they are not shielded like they should be. We don't think it is the monitors, as both have a self test, before the Gateway logo shows, that displays red, green , and yellow and they look fine. When trying to adjust the color on the P.B. there is no difference made with green, on the EV500, there is no difference when changing the blue, none at all. I think that covers it. We have tried two other tech sites, and although the people tried to help, no one was able to figure it out. PLEASE, your our last step before giving up both of the monitors for shot. Thank you.

Sounds like you've gone through the mill and back... you poor thing! The last thing you probably want is more questions thrown at you but I only have a couple ;)
Have you tried using windows autoupdate yet to see what/if it picks up?
When you run it in safe mode (and it uses std vga) do you still have the same problem with your colours?
Any exclaimation points or question marks in your device manager?
are you still missing that dll file?????

The questions are no problem. Yes, we have tried the Windows update, several times in fact, and although there were things that it updated, none of them fixed the color. Safe mode (and VGA by itself) make no noticeable difference. And we are still missing that file. We have search a few sites, and the net in general, but were unable to find it. Any advice?? Oh, and there are no ! or ? in the device manager, and no conflicts in the Graphics conroller. Thank you, I hope I answered all your questions.

Hi :)
re the missing file... have you tried getting assistance from Gateway? I had a wee look around there site and it seems they have a something similar to an autoupdate feature, also a page on drivers etc
I'm a little confused  so are you saying that the other monitor worked aok on the PB, then you put it on the Gateway and it didn't work either, then you moved it back to the PB and it doesn't go on that now either?
do you remember what and how the colour change came about? had you just installed/uninstalled/updated anything? power problems at the time? something, anything ;)

Now you sound as confused as we were. I say were because we took the computer to a third monitor today and all was fine. Bottom line, both of the monitors are messed, the only question then is why did they both go bad. We are going to trade the power switch board for a new surge protector and get a new monitor and cross our fingers. I appreciate your help, although I feel a little silly now. Who new? This has been an experience, to be sure. Thank you again.

I'm always confused   it excuses my behaviour that way ;)
Great news about the 3rd monitor working... what a bit of rotten luck to loose the other 2 but all the best with the new 1
take care
