What version of Nortons? Also does the optimizing map show a lot of white within the gray. or Is the gray all lumped together?

Try Diskeeper (http://www.executive.com) -- I got it a few months ago and I've been very happy with it. I'm still raving about it. (!)

I need something that is free.I haven't got many funds.
Why would the back-up drive get fragmented when it i not being used anyway?

If your back up is stored as an image (is the back up file stored in the backup utility directory?)- that could be the problem, I have a few Gig that comes up in a defrag as fragmented- In truth its not- the computer just doesnt recognise it- its image files of my game CD's :D
Might be not worth worrying about- maybe im just crapping on, but that my 2c :-)
