I finally convinced my mom to get a Sony Vaio about two months ago, and I love it. Just recently, however, sometimes [ not all the time ] when you select shut down in Win ME and press okay, it will shut down and then restart... It is possible to just turn it off while windows is loading (which will not hurt the computer, and in my opinion it won't hurt the PC even inside windows, after doing it for three years every time with my old computer and nothing happened-- but that's another debate) but my mom beleives that this ruins the computer. She is one of those people who would return anything that doesn't completely meet her standards (she would return a jaguar she got for free if the cd player wasn't loud enough,) and she is going to return the computer if it cannot be 'fixed.' I don't want to do this, since I already installed 4 gigs of software on here. Can anybody help me??

Hi Jake

your Mum sounds like a character and should I wish to enter the debate about shutting it down during a startup (which I don't :D )I'd side with her ;) but lets work on keeping her happy and pleased with her recent purchase...
the restart instead of shutdown...generally it's not a 'serious' problem as this can be caused by bits and pieces in your temp folders so try a bit of system maintenance and a cleanout. Another reason is when a prog/app hasn't quite finished closing/accessing when you go to shutdown the comp... this can include drivers, also watch the programs you have in your system tray as they can be working away in the background without your knowing.

If it's becoming a problem then check out your Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) to see what's running in the background prior to shutting down
