I probably have about 600 mp3s on my computer that I have pulled off my CDs so that I can listen to them on my computer... They have been on there forever and never had a problem... All of a sudden yesterday, I noticed that some of the songs would not play in my media player (Creative Media Source). So I restarted just in case and still had the same problem... I thought Media Source could be having problems so I tried to open a song with Windows Media Player 9 and got "ClassFactory cannot supply requested class" error no. 80040111.

There are about 40 that will not play now and they all have played fine before today. All my other songs, which are located in the same folder play just fine. I have done anti-virus scan, restarted, everything I can think of right now and they will not play. I have not added or deleted any MP3s in a very long time.

I'm running Windows XP SP1 and all the latest driver & windows updates. Anti-virus has been running the whole time.

My main concern is what caused these files to not work all of a sudden and could it effect other files of greater importance...

Is it possible to try playing the MP3's through another computer, or personal MP3 player?

Has the program itself, somehow lost the ability to play MP3's? This could be checked through its' Properties! :)

Just throwing some basic thoughts here!!

remember that mp3s use codecs exactly like movies. if you tried wmp and cms, it sounds like the mp3s are corrupted. are they and the same sequence as in genre, size, name, artist, etc?

Compare the CODEC properties of a working MP3 and a non working MP3.

It may be that as suggested a CODEC has changed or been corrupted.

discovered what the problem is...all files from now on must end with what they are example..Pink Floyd.mp3......Wildfire.midi...scenery.jpg...befor e the file extension did not have to be included...but now you must end the file with dot and it"s origin..mp3..jpg...midi.. mpeg..etc...i notice this after after some of my pics and movie files also stopped functioning...just added the extension and everything is back to normal

Thats a question i can not answer..i just don"t know...but like i said i put the extensions back on and everything returned to normal....a friend of mine had the same problem...it only effected his jpg files..and everything checked out fine on his PC to, with scanning for viruses and adware etc....and this is not an isolated incident..it"s happening quite a bit.

I have a similar problem.... but it affects me far worse.
All of a sudden, WinAmp (or WM player for that matter) does the 'musical chairs' thing in my playlist (800 + songs). I go to my mp3.s folder......... and all my files appear to be of 0 KB. Its as if all their data is lost. But checking the free space in that partition shows that the original size is counted. I noticed that all the files were 'last modified' at 12:55 am on June 12th. While trying System Restore to get back to an old setting, I noticed that there was a DirectX9 update and a 'Windows Update V4' at 12:46 am on that same day. I'm guessing its related........ so could you guide me how to undo that update........... or use RegEdit to manually go back to an earlier setting. I tried 'System Restore' and it didn't work.

PS. Interestingly, mp3s off a CD I ripped AFTER I find out about this problem work fine.

Any help would be gretaly appreciated.
