instead of just booting up windows, my computer brings up a prompt menu, ya know, the one that asks if you want normal, safe mode, msdos etc. it happened in windows98, and now that i've installed me, its still happening. i cant find anything that addresses this.

Hi, Welcome to Cybertech....

Can you get to Safe or Normal mode from that screen?

Did you do a clean install of Win/ME or an Upgrade?

You can download a Win/ME bootup disk at www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) Download it to your Hard drive then Extract it to a floppy. Then restart your system.

At the A:/ prompt type sys c: That will copy the system files needed to boot windows. Then take the floppy out and reboot your system. See if it will Boot to Normal mode now....

If that doesn't work, then put the floppy drive back in and at the A:/ prompt type fdisk /mbr This will rebuild your Master Boot directory....

yeah, i installed a complete version of windows me over the windows 98 se that i was running. that is, i didnt reformat the disk first. i had the same problem in windows 98.

i tried both suggestions, but neither one worked, i boot up to a prompt menu. if i select normal it will boot right to windows. if i dont it counts down 28 seconds then boots on its own.

Hi shoot me now,

We can fix this with Notepad.

Open Notepad
http://seafoods.hypermart.net/images/msdos_sys_1.gif

Get the File/Open...
http://seafoods.hypermart.net/images/msdos_sys_2.gif

Type c:\Msdos.sys right in this spot
http://seafoods.hypermart.net/images/msdos_sys_3.gif

Now look for the line
BootMenu=1
and change it to
BootMenu=0
(that's a zero)

Next

Now look for the line
BootGUI=
and make sure it says
BootGUI=1

Back to Notepad menu and
File/Save

Reboot your computer.

Edited for code blunder

thanks spider...can you tell me how to save it? when i go to file and click save, it asks for a file name. the name says msdos, but its a read only file and it wont let me save as that. it wont just save without prompting me for a file name. if i give it a random name and reboot, it doesnt save the changes. feeling like an idiot...

Oh no, that idiot would be me :)

I knew it was read only and should have told you how to deal with that. Sorry.

Ok, on your desktop
right-mouse over Start(button)
select
Explore

This is Windows Explorer we're looking at.
Now make sure in where it says
Address(the big long white skinny thing near the top) that you are at C:\
go to the far right side of the Address cell(long white skinny thing)
and there is a small button with a small black upsidedown triangle
looking arrow.
Click on that arrow and select (C: )
now in the menu of Windows Explorer go to
Tools
Folder Options...
then select the
View(tab)
in that list is a catagory
Hidden files and under there is
Show all files
make sure that is selected.
Say OK(button)

Now in Windows Explorer scroll down till you see
Msdos.sys
put your right-mouse over it and click
select
Properties
un-select
Read-only and Hidden
and click
OK(button)

Now go do the Notepad thing with Msdos.sys

Another thing I forgot to mention..before you save Msdos.sys
when you have Notepad opening, or saving, a file
make sure you change Text Documents in
Files of type: to All Files (*.*)
Like this
http://seafoods.hypermart.net/images/msdos_sys_4.gif

After you save Msdos.sys you have to open up Windows Explorer
again and
right-mouse over Msdos.sys and select
Read-only and Hidden back to being checked.

then you can reboot....whew.

Edited for boo-boo
