Smile Networking Win XP and Win 2K

Here's what I want to do. Run a crossover cable between a Win 2000 Pro. computer and a Win XP home computer. Then use the XP machine as an gateway for internet access via a dialup connection. Can it be done? If so, how would I set it up? Can both computers be on line at the same time? Thanks.

PS: I know this a complex setup, so any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

XP supports ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and has a wizard to set it up.

Personally never done it with XP & Win2000, but I would have thought it would be the same process.

Im actually going to be doing the same thing- but in a reversed way- run Win2k as a ICS server to two WinXP pro machines- i recommend using win2k pro as the ICS machine- WinXP would suit you better as the machine you used to connect to the win2k machine

And if you can get by without using the ICS wizard...its FAR better, just make sure your IP's are relative eg. 192.168.1.23 to 192.168.1.1 etc set up your connection on W2k or Winxp (whichever you wish to share it through is up to you) and after you have them talkin to each other (you can see all the systems on the network) you should be ok.

I also recommend getting your mitts on EMCO (Remote Connection Management) or utilising Remote Asistance (this will need to be enabled in My Computer)

Thumbs up All right

Jmjet,

Your crossover cable is a network crossover cable, am I right?

If it is, yes. It can be done like any other regular network internet connection sharing.

And both machines will be able to access at the same time, just remember that bandwidth through dialup is narrow and it will be shared.

So do not dream of haveing fast internet access.

Good luck.
