Help on hoow to SETUP a NETWORK
I have 2 systems. One with WIN 95 and a new system with WIN XP. I have a SMC7004VBR router connecting to my SYMPATICO DSL. Both systems are connected to the LAN and accessing my DSL connection and working "FAB".
Now, I'm wanting to get them talkin' to each other...the Win95 and the WinXP systems.....I ran the the "Setup a Home or Small Office Network" wizard in my XP "MY NETWORK PLACES" window...but this hasn't really got me anywhere as yet. Can anyone give a Step by Step "How To" on this?.....I'd really like to have a go at NETWORKING these systems TOGETHER....tradin' FILES back and forth 'n ALL THAT JAZZ......if for NO GOOD REASON other than the experience and the KNOWLEDGE GAINED from Tryin' and Doin'. Thanks y'all for any assistance offered. jayro

...hmm
Your Still using windows 95?? Is it an old system or is that just your preference?? What version of 95 are you using? Im not entirely sure that 95 supports networking mate- I remember when i was stil new to the networking scene, using 95 alpha edition...there is no way it can be networked from memory.. I recommend a new OS on that system, 2000 should run fine...and that will be perfect, however- your also right to use 98... 95...is not networking material sorry to say.. I wish i could say more about 95 2nd edtion but i never used it- i jumped straight on up to 2k pro.. From memory, second edition is capable of networking- but i would stick with something more network friendly such as 98 or 2k NOW- if i am wrong, you should be able to get them to talk Go to your network properites, (on both machines) and configure the IP's in the LAN connection TCP/IP properties to match levels Ie: 192.168.10.2 and 192.168.10.3 (they can see each other this way..also make sure your subnet 255.255.255.0 so this way the The systems know you are using that IP set up The next step is to "ping" each system, go to you "run" icon, type "cmd" in the prompt and then you should have the DOS or command prompt, type "ping 192.168.10.2" substitute the other systems IP when trying to ping it from annother system Ie: "Ping<space> (insert desired IP here)" Now..if you have them pinging...reset both machines so everything is running smoothly, you should be able to see the other system in "My Network Neighbourhood" and after that step has been made, its easy to share files...one small problem that just came to memory...95 is FAT32 (or 16) formatted (meaning i dont think securites can be set up) this is why i think you should have Win2k Pro on your 95 machine..you will then have access to NTFS formatting (new technology file security) and then you can be assured that file sharing will work.. i hope some of this is helpful hey..good luck! Cheers

hey ANTISKEPTIC84
thanks for your INPUT..... it certainly has been a topic that has given me many differing thoughts and opinions...been looking for help in many places...'n no one seems to be able to get me the type of help I require.....maybe I will take the PLUNGE and update the WIN95 Box to the most current WIN OS compatible with that system.....it's been such a TROOPER of a BOX that I don't wanna just scrap it.... even if it' HOPELESSLY OUTDATED...... lotsa good STORAGE available on it, if nothing else....plus, wanna learn about NETWORKING and all that jazz... at any rate....the SMC router has assigned IP address to each system as follows: WIN XP 192.168.2.100 WIN 95 192.168.2.102 Both have SUBNET MASKS of 255.255.255.0 however, going in and configuring LAN TCP settings ain't accomplishing nothing but PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED in IE..... didn't quite follow your instructs anyways....little to non-specific for me at this stage of the game, I guess....sorta need....open "x" and click "y"...enter "z" and etc etc etc...y'know...oh well thanks again for your input..... jayro

No- the box should be fine- if you want the extra storage, move the HDD into your new machine....
if you want the the functionality of an extra machine...keep it What are the stats on your current machine?? What are you running?? If you let me know, i could recommend an OS suitable to your needs

In 95 and XP goto the Network properties in control panel and make suree NetBEUI is installed.
If not click ADD, then Protocol and add NetBEUI

While setting up the network disable all firewalls. This includes the WinXP Firewall.
If you still have no luch then try the network without the router. You will need a Crossover cable.

DEGSY.....I disabled ALL FIREWALLS, I can PING the other computer from the Win95 system and from the WinXP system.
The Win95 system Network Identification details are: Computer Name - System ala **** Workgroup - Sewer Gang Computer Description - Win95 The same details for the WinXP system are: Computer Name - ****ty Pitty Workgroup - Sewer Gang Computer Description - Win XP On the WINXP system, the My Network Places window shows a SHARED DOCS folder only. Running the Add A Network Places Wizard and "BROWSING" the My Network Places folder gives me a HEIRARCHY of FILES showing ENTIRE NETWORK and Shared Docs on WinXP (****ty Pitty). Expanding ENTIRE NETWORK shows sub folders as MS Terminal Services, MS Windows Network and Web Client Network. Only Entire Network shows anything further. Namely Entire Network folder opens to show the SEWER GANG WORKGROUP. This workgroup folder shows ****TY PITTY and SYSTEM ala **** folders. ****ty Pitty has 3 folders in it. Shared Docs, Printers and Faxes and Scheduled Tasks. System ala **** has no folders in it. Selecting ****ty Pitty or System ala **** in the Browse for Folder Window doesn't cause the OK Button to become active.....only clicking on the Sub Folders in ****ty Pitty cause the OK button to become ACTIVE. As there are no folders in System ala ****....this isn't an Option. What should I be doing in the Add Network Place Wizard? This Wizard doesn't seem to be accomplishing nothing for me. When it comes to the Win95 system, "expanding" My Network Neighborhood shows Entire Network, ****tyPitty and System ala ****. Expanding Entire Netword shows the Workgroup "Sewer Gang" and expanding this W/G shows ****tyPitty(with Shared Docs) and System ala ****(empty) again (why is each system showing twice like that?). I can't seem to add anything to System ala **** and clicking on Shared Docs folder in ****ty Pitty shows ACCESS DENIED. So now, the systems are SEEING each other over the NETWORK...but I can't accomplish anything ON THE NETWORK. Where do I go from here? Also, what if I reactive my Norton Internet Security Personal Firewall on the WinXP system and the Sygate Personal Firewall on the Win95 system? Will the two computers STOP seeing each other on the network? Are you NOT SUPPOSED to run a SOFTWARE FIREWALL when NETWORKING COMPUTERS with each other. I'm confused about this FIREWALL Disabling thing. anyways.... thanks again and your further advised is appreciated. jayro P.S. After posting...the forum censor replaced characters in my post with *'s due to the CONTENT involved. the ****'s throughout my posts are really "s/h/i/t. LOL

It is just a troubleshooting technique to disable firewalls while setting up a network.
You definately need to re-enable them when you have got your network running. try changing the details, just for texting purposes. Change XP name to XPPC Change 95 name to 95PC Change the workgroup on each PC to MSHOME Then reboot each PC. You may also think about resetting the router. Also create a share called TESTXP This could be the Windows folder on XP. Now on the Windows 95 PC create a shortcut and use the url \\XPPC\TESTXP Double click the shortcut and see if you can browse the share. (notice that all names are now 8 characters or less with no spaces)

Degsy.... ok...renamed things as you suggested
I can still PING the "other computer" from each system. However, neither sytem is READING the other. My Network Places doesn't show anything but the WINXP system as part of the Network and vice versa with the Network Neighborhood for the WIN95 system. As to creating a "SHARE".... not sure what that means or how or where to do that. When y'said "this could be the WINDOWS Folder on XP".... don't know what that means....or at least how you're meaning it in this context. As for "creating a WIN95 shortcut" with the URL of file:///XPPCTESTXP, how and where do I create this shortcut? Sorry for bein' sucha PITA, but this is all completely new to me and the instructions are assuming a level of UNDERSTANDING I just don't have yet. And another thing..... I've had each system "seeing" the other before, but now they don't see each other at all. This is confusing to me also. What's causing that to happen? How do I get each system to see the other, always, after booting up each computer. thanks again, Degsy jayro P.S. - I created rules in WINXP's Norton Internet Security Personal Firewall and WIN95's Sygate Personal Firewall to let each LAN IP address throught the respective firewalls. This is what is allowing the PING(s) through, I'd guess. Will it also allow general communication between the 2 systems. Just wanting to be sure on that point.

for the short cut you don't need the file:///
Right-Click the Desktop and select New then Shortcut in the command line box put \\XPPC this will create a shortcut to the XP machine.

All I got was a DIALOGE BOX telling me the XPPC couldn't be found. Clicked OK and ended up back where I started from.
sorry...this ain't going so good, is it. XP system is blissfully ignorant of the 95 system and vice versa maybe this just isn't possible to accomplish?

That means it cannot see the network.
As suggested earlier it may be an idea to get a CAT5 Crossover Cable and connect the PC's directly without the router.
