Hi Team,
I have a SMC 11Mbps wireless usb adapter "smc2662w"
A couple of people I know invited me to try their open ap's.
I got a good signal from both but could not get a web page to open for some reason.
The second Ap has a wep so I will get some numbers for it soon. The first one is totally open to who ever parks in the street.
Do I need to do any setting up of my lan connection or dial up??
Running Win98se right now.
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Hello, jaytee.

At first, are you sure you were invited, instead of defied? ;)

Did you make any progress?

Could you tell us what messages appeared during your tentatives?

Was the gateway really active by the time you tried connection? Does it have internet access? Is there any ICS/proxy service active on your gateway?

Do you have already TCP/IP protocol, right? Checked your subnetwork mask? Do your computer IP address and your gateway's one do belong to the same subnetwork?

If the gateway is a proxy server, was your browser properly setup in order to enable internet connection?

Regards.

Hi GMBastos ;)
Thank you for responding
Yes I am invited,
I found out some stuff, the 2nd ap is not completely open.
I was given a password and some instructions on what ip address and gateway submask to use. The reason I got all this is because there is nothing on the ap yet so he told me to ping his wireless computer. Sadly by the time I got back to his spot the ap was down (changing to a omni over the holidays) so I could not ping him. I hope to get connected there in a week or two... I have not been back to the first ap because the house is full of Linux geeks and I need to see them about setting up my Mandrake 9.2 system as It is causing a kernel panic when I try to run the wireless usb adaptor under Linux. :upset:
