Hi guys,

Haven't been here in awhile (my computer is being nice for a change :) ) but I'm wondering how I can find out what some of the entries in my registry are. I use RegCleaner and there are some entries that I have no idea where they came from. I've read thru all the help that comes with the program but it doesn't say anything about this. Does anyone know how I can find more info on these entries?

Thanks,
Tami

Alot of entries are self explanatory, but some can be quite obscure. It would really help if you posted the entries that you are wondering about. that way, we could all take a look at them and give you some sort of explanation. :)

Hi Theoran,

I'm sorry, I didn't think of that. The main one is a entry called Web20ne and there isn't any author.

I did a search on google for each and went to each of their websites and read about what they offered. I know I never downloaded anything from them.

BackWeb Client is the entry and the author is BackWeb.
http://www.backweb.com/news_archives/html/relempower.html

The entry is registration and the author is DataLode.
http://www.datalode.com/application_software.html

The entry is Ez_1-2-3 and the author is Gib.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Gib+%2B+Ez_1-2-3&btnG=Google+Search
http://www.baronbarclay.com/gib.html

The entry is Hypercosm3D and the author is Hypercosm. This is what I found for them;
http://www.macweb3d.org/tools/non-vrml.html

Another thing funny about this is one is that it says its a plugin only for Netscape. I don't even have Netscape on here.

The entry is for Access Ramp and the author is Inverse.
http://help.mindspring.com/docs/004/accessramp/accessramp.php3

I don't even use Mindspring!

The author for these next four entries is 'S3.'

Multimedia
Metal
S3gl
BusmastersDevices
http://www.selznick.com/

The entry is 'afilitates.' The author is WebInstall.

There a couple of the above that are kind of up in the air at the moment tho. A few weeks ago I downloaded a program called 'MyNetWatchman.' http://mynetwatchman.com/
It uses an agent software and I'm thinking one or two of those entries might be for that program. I emailed the guy this evening and asked him about it. It's a great program if you're interested in things like that. The guy who wrote the program is wonderful. I had a problem with downloading it and he actually called me and was on the phone with me for an hour figuring out what was wrong and fixing it. Not too many people that will do that!

Anyway, maybe I don't need to worry about these entries??? I just thought maybe you guys would know.

Thanks,
Tami

Hang in there Tami....I don't run and hide under the bed whenever I run regedit anymore, but it still isn't my cup of tea. Maybe a registry wizard will happen by soon. ;)

I do know that Backweb is pretty much a waste of time. It is a background program that connects to the net looking for updates and such. I do my own updates, so I removed backweb awhile ago. Don't remember going into the registry, though. Just did it through add/remove. Probably still registry entries on my machine as well.

Hey Maxximilian,

I do my own updates too. I went and looked for that BackWeb in my add/remove and it's not even listed there. Someone told me they thought it was something Microsoft puts on here.

Have you ever used RegCleaner; http://www.jv16.org/?

I've been using it for awhile now and like it alot. It's real good for times that I take something off my computer from the add/remove and it still leaves something in the registry. After talking to the guy whose program (mynetwatchman) I downloaded a bit ago, he said none of those things came from him. Can I just remove all those things? From what I read on those web sites I don't think they're anything I want on my computer.

Thanks,
Tami

Careful about removing the 'S3' entries. First check if you have an S3 graphics card (or on-board).

Thanks guys for your input. This is what I ended up taking off;

BackWeb-Client
DataLode
Ez_1-2-3
Access Ramp

I ended up leaving on the stuff from S3 although I don't have a S3 graphics anything on here zipulrich. And I left on the WebInstall because I do have BigFix on here and it might very well use that. After reading each of what these things do at their web sites I figured it was ok to leave them on here. I hope I haven't screwed anything up. :)

But thanks you guys for your time, I appreciate it.
Tami

P.S. The only one I still never found anything out about is the Web20ne. I've left it on for now but if any of you hear anything about it, would you please let me know. I hate having something on here that I don't know anything about. I tend to download things from the internet kinda often, heck that's one of the fun things about computers. But with all the phone-home crap they have out there, you have to be careful.

Just a little update.

I finally went and did some looking up about the registry and figured out where to look to find where the entries come from. That Web20ne entry comes from a program I downloaded call 'eNotes.' Just wanted to let you guys know.

Tami :)

I'm not sure if this is pertinent or not, but FYI
http://www.createwindow.com/wininfo/regclean.htm

states that RegClean is NOT compatible with WinME or WinXP. Neither do I know if this is a correct statement. I'm looking for something to clean my ME registry also.

Samiam, RegClean is a Microsoft product. It's good for what it does.

What Tami3_3 uses (and provided a good link to) is RegCleaner, a great little tool for cleaning XP and ME registries. (W9x, too)
