Hi Guys - can anybody offer an insight into this one?

Nearly every time I boot up (or restart) Windows ME opens up a window showing the root for each hard drive on my system and auto-runs any CDs in the CD drives.

I cannot see any setting or obvious reason for this and it is anoying the heck out of me.

NB This is a clean install of the UK OEM version.

Go to start / run / and type msconfig / and then press enter / go to the startup tab.

Could you please post back what you have in there. Everything in there that is checked, is set to start when windows boots.

Okey dokey

I have posted a clipped clipboard image here http://www.geocities.com/littletony101/Image3.jpg

(Seemed easier than typing the whole lot)

Any answers here?

OK here goes (file names only)

MSMSGS, scanregisty, taskmonitor, pchealth, systemtray, loadpowerprofile, 3dfx tools, 3dfx task manager, pcciomon.exe, pop3trap.exe, webtrap.exe, adaptec directcd, cool mouse 97, pdffactory dispatcher v1, loadpowerprofile, schedulingagent, ssdpsrv, *statemgr, pcciomon.exe, adobe gamma loader.exe

I recognise most of these and would not think them responsible, but I will bow to superior knowledge.

Sorry Innes, but all I can suggest is that you start a trial and error process with those entries. Remove the checks from them one at a time and see if you see which one is doing it (if any). Leave the important things like scan registry, systemtray, mouse, etc. alone and play with the Anti-virus and Adeptic ones. Keep track of what you change, so you can go back in case of trouble.

Maybe you are set for some kind of virus scan at boot-up. Just a guess, though.

If this doesn't get you somewhere, there may be some other files getting processed at start-up that are responsible. Sorry.....not much help, I know. :(
