ME SLOWDOWN !

hello. when i connect to the internet using dialup networking on a 56k modem my computer starts running really slow and i dont know why. it never used to do it.its fast untill i connect or try to . Everything is slow and it is as if i am on a slow machine.
i am sharing my connection with 1 other machine on my network using ICS provided by windows.
Help me please !

i just had a great idea and i went to the system monitor feature and watched the processor. all i had open was the system monitor and the chart was reading 100% processor usage when i was doin nothin .. ( this is while connected)
it only goes down occasionally but most of the time the screen is full. !
help !
