When I try to update software components such as drivers through internet downloads I would get the message 'Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1 : %2.' This occurs under the splash screen. This would like sometimes as long as 15 minutes with the message repeating itself (in the case of upgrading to directx8.1) and sometimes just once or twice (in the case of the latest nvidia driver.) Then it'll end with a warning that Windows failed to change some system files and windows may fail to launch. Then upon pressing any button Windows Me would launch and setup would update system files and all would seem to be fine. But I think not all is well. Directx8 doesn't seem to work properly. Furthermore diagdx on the ME is still an older version and gives a warning that the info it gives is unreliable because the DX8 it is detecting is newer that it. DirectX (4.08.01.0881) DxDiag (4.07.01.3000). Would appreciate help on this issue. Game drivers are failing to load

Hi orobora,
Are you running LiveUpdate? That particular error message seems to be directly related to LiveUpdate. Please see this article (http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/7e7f15291a25d938882567e50048a048/d05d177e36623dbc88256a2900557f5e) from the Symantec Knowledge base. Would feel more comfortable if someone else took a look and concurred with this before you try the fix.
