View Full Version : Windows ME freezes after going online

We are using Windows ME and are on a dial-up 56K connection. Whenever we go online, the computer freezes after 2:45 seconds, to the point where we can't click anything at all and CTRL+ALT+DEL won't work. When we don't go online, it doesn't freeze. We know it isn't caused by the internet connection itself because we use the same internet connection and the same operating system on another computer and that computer does not crash. We've tried all of the ad / spybot removal programs to no avail. We've looked at MSConfig and removed the uneeded start-up programs and it still freezes. We even ran scandisk and everything and it fixes the problem temporarily but the next time the computer turns on, it freezes again. It ONLY freezes after going online.

We tried running Windows ME setup from the Windows ME disk and we get an error saying that Drive C can't be checked. I really don't know what is causing this error nor do I know what is causing the computer to freeze while going online (it freezes while using Outlook and while browsing with MSIE). Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Hi
This may be becouse the Temprary internet files is big and your harddisk is fragment
Try to run the clean manager then run scandisk and then Defragment

If this did not help
This may by becouse of a virus making a flood on your computer that making windows to crash
get the lastest update from the internet for your AV and then scan your computer for virus

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options -- Click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files. Then Start > Programs (Accessories)> System Tools > Disc Cleanup. Then, finally, Start > Run and type defrag and press enter.

Thanks, but we have already run scandisk, decreased the temp internet files, defrag and virus scans (with updated AV software) hundreds of times and this does not fix the problem.

Hi buddy..Download 'Hijack This!'create a new folder and put hijack into it Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, Check for updates first by clicking the config then tools buttons. and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.
http://mjc1.com/files/merijn/HijackThis.exe It will show what's running on your computer...Don't make any changes until
someone checks it out.;)

"Decreasing" the temp internet files is not what I suggested you do. Did you DELETE them?

Anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem? Thanks, I would REALLY appreciate it! ;)

You might try uninstalling the Google Toolbar through add/remove programs and see if the problem persists (may be corrupted, you can always reinstall it), if so, delete your TIFs and all offline content again and try the IE repair tool. Highlight M$IE in add/remove programs, click remove, choose the repair option and click apply/okay, wait for the procedure to complete and okay out of add/remove, you should be prompted to reboot (I think). End tasks of all running programs using Ctrl+Alt+Del except explorer and systray before running the IE repair.

Hmmm, I just went over your post again, seems you have two pop up stoppers running (Googlebar and Popup Cop)? I wouldn't think that would be good...

Should I delete Popup Cop? I'll do the things you suggested, Leroi, thanks so much. :D
