hi muddyms

need more information here.

what did you update, windows or media player ?

i'm assuming you're using winME , what version of media player.
did it EVER work ?
what are you trying to access and what error message (if any) are you getting ?

I'm new to this medium and more computer illiterate than I realized...having said that; I updated the media player per a message rcvd via windows update(the pop-up on the start button) It did function before that, after update I could open it but once I attempted to do anything the computer would freeze (no messages) and the only way out, or the one that worked for me was to shut down (pushing/holding the on-off button on the CPU til it shut off) the computer. This was awhile ago, recently I added software that utilizes the media player and it worked just fine which tells me I'm doing something wrong but clueless as to what to do different.

ok -- have you tried to use media player again after the freeze ? it sounds like you're saying it's working now.
after you did the update , did you reboot the computer BEFORE you tryed using media player ?
most updates will cause problems if you don't shut the computer off and then restart it after updating.

updating the media player occured several months ago, I've been in and out of my computer a million times since...every attempt to open media player results in freeze (at a pt I gave up in frustration)...this xmas I rcvd a "palm" w/software, when I ran the software a tutorial utilizing the media player ran without a problem...when I attempted to play the "player" it again froze up(still frustrated)!

OK, now we're getting somewhere.

Muddyms, it sounds like Windows Media Player is able to play some forms of multimedia files but is freezing on other types.
What we need get you to do now is tell us what type of files they are.

1st step in this process is probably to un-hide the file extensions so you can see them...
From "My computer", go View > Folder Options.
Click on the "View" tab and take the tick out of "Hide file extensions for known file types".

Next, find a file that plays properly in Windows Media Player and tell us what the file extension is (last three characters after the period = e.g. AVI, MPG etc etc..

Next find a file that freezes Media Player and tell us what file extension it has.

Once we know this, we'll be able to fix your problem I'm sure.

ok I've gotten thru the part about un-ticking the "Hide file extensions for known file types" now HOW do I find files that work or don't? I know what a file extention is but how do I know one that works from one that doesn't? and where do I look for it?
