explorer errors

I have Windows ME and recently I've been having a lot of trouble with it. When shutting down, for example, it always comes up with the error "explorer has caused an error in <unknown>" and then it's like it restarts windows ME and gets half way before just turning off. Even more perplexing is now I've been getting other error messages such as explorer has caused an error in ULBUI.DLL, or it causes an error in Kernal32 (which I believe is the operating system for Win ME). I'm hoping that my system isn't corrupt, and I've been really considering just wiping the whole thing clean and upgrading to Win XP, but in the meantime... is there anything I can do short of a system restore until before this all started to happen?
