Defrag disappeared?
When I tried to defrag the following message appeared,"The shortcut "Disc Defragmenter.Ink refers to a location that is unavailable. The location could be on a hard drive on this computer. Check to make sure the disc is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet, and then try again." I don't have a clue what has happened. I defragged approx. 1 month ago and everything worked fine. Any ideas?

Legaldiva007,
Go to C:\WINDOWS and see if you have defrag.exe. If you do double click on it and see if that works. |

I searched C:\Windows and defrag.exe was NOT there. However, it said I had 416 objects in that file. Isn't that way too many files? Any other suggestions on where I might find defrag?

Ummmm....just to be safe I would run a complete and up-to-date virus scan. The .INK extension is a Corel proprietary extension I believe and should have nothing to do with the defrag utility. I have also seen where that extension is used by some email worms to propogate. Run the scan, and if your system is clean, then we can look into where that utility has gone. Just a precaution since that is a pretty strange error message you have there in this case.
As for the file number...I have 389 objects, over 700 folders, and over 10,000 files. I don't consider your 416 objects to be excessive. |

Max, I ran a full virus scan, and no viruses were found. What can I do now?

Well I don't know what happened to your defragger, but it seems to have gone away.
If you like, you can send me an email so I can send you a copy of my WinME defragger file. You would then drop it in the C:\WINDOWS\ directory. Then go to the Start Button/Programs/Accesories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter where you would right-click the entry and hit properties. In the box that shows up you make sure that in the "Target" window it reads C:\WINDOWS\DEFRAG.EXE My email is maxximilian@attbi.com I won't be on line for too much longer, so if you would like to try this, you may not get the file until tomorrow. Very curious where your original file went, though...and why the shortcut is pointing to Disc Defragmenter.Ink Hang on a second....just in case this a matter of a file just not being seen for some reason, go to the Start Button/Programs/Accesories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter and right-click the entry and hit properties. What is listed in the "target" window? It should be as I listed above. If it isn't, change it and give it a try. If still won't work I can send you the file. |

Max. your email bounced back to me so I will post my reply here. I tried what you suggested, and listed in the "target" window was C:\\WINDOWS\DEFRAG.EXE However, in the "Start In" window, it was blank. Could this be the problem?

hi legaldiva007
the "start in" window SHOULD be empty. this was probably a typo but , in the "target", were there actually 2 slash marks ( \\ ) after the C: ? if so , remove one of them and see if that helps. also , in the properties window , click the "find target" button and then on "show files" link on the window that opens. see if the DEFRAG.EXE is there. if not then it should be on your computer in the "cab" files (probably WIN98_40.CAB) do you have a program to open "cab" files , like winzip 7.0 or higher ? if you do , let me know and i'll tell you how to find and install it. one other thing. are you sure the original error said defrag.ink and not .Lnk ? LNK is the extention used for the ms-dos name for shortcuts. [ 01 January 2002: Message edited by: Mr1drful ]

You are right, it was a typo...there was only one \ after C:
Yes, I'm sure the error said Defrag Ink I hate to sound like a "dummy" but all I know is I have WIN Zip...don't know what version. I tried to click on "show files", but the same error came up and I could not. |

ok , then you can open the cab files.
go to start find files or folders in the middle window (the one that says "named" type DEFRAG make sure it is set to "look in" windows C click "find" check the list for a ".CAB" file (probably will be WIN98_40.CAB) double click on it and let winzip open it. scroll down the list till you see DEFRAG.EXE click on it once to highlight it and then use the "extract" feature of winzip when you click extract you will see an "extract to" window. type in C:\WINDOWS click the "extract" button that will put it back where it belongs and you should be able to use it again. ( MAKE SURE WINZIP IS IN CLASIC MODE) if it opens in wizard mode , just click the button to the left that says clasic mode. good luck

This didn't work either. There were ONLY two files that came up and both of them were Defrag shortcuts, NOTHING about a ".CAB". I tried opening both of them, and a message came up saying, "The WinZip Wizard cannot open this file; it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try dowloading it again. If you want to add the file to an archive, first create or open the achive, then drop the file again."

then you'll have to try and get it from your windows cd.
make sure your "find files or folders" window is set to "look in" your cd-rom drive. if this doesn't work then someone will have to email you the file. sorry but i don't have WinME and i don't know if my Win98 one will work.

Hi folks...lots of activity in my absence
Sorry about the bouncing email...don't know what went wrong. Anyway I have uploaded a copy of my DEFRAG.EXE to my website. Hit the link below and save the file to your windows folder. Provided you have the shortcut set up properly (instructions above) it should work for you. Good luck. ![]() http://www.omnimaxx.com/hotlink/DEFRAG.EXE |
