When I start my computer, the file you are trying to open is in use message is displayed and the boot process halts ,If i click on retry th PC boots up ok, however when I close windows down the screen closes but the tower remains powered up instead of shutting down, anyone got any advice??

I would bootup your computer and go into MSCONFIG and uncheck all apps that are starting at bootup. Read over the How to Use the System Configuration Utility (http://members.tripod.com/ramblingsoftheoran/Tutorials/msconfig.htm) article for instructions on how to do this.
Could you also post what your AUTOEXEC.BAT file says and what your CONFIG.SYS say?
