Question formatting and installing 98se

I have taken ME off my computer and tried to install 98se but I keep getting an error message saying a fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0157:00003F73 and it closes down in a boot loop like thing. Can anyone help me. Thanks Molly

Did you format the hard drive first?

This appears to be a conflict with your antivirus

Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Command Prompt Only.
At the command prompt, type edit c:\autoexec.bat, and then press ENTER.
Type rem, and then a space at the beginning of the line that contains Vshield.exe (if you are using McAfee).

If you are using Norton AntiVirus, type rem and then a space at the beginning of the line added by Norton AntiVirus.
Save and then close the Autoexec.bat file.
Restart your computer. Setup should be able to continue.

Hello Molly, welcome to CTH!

Give this a look over, it should explain this issue and how to fix it.

Which Bootdisk did you use to start the setup, the Windows 98 or the ME one?

Try using the Windows 98SE OEM bootdisk from here

Download it to the PC that you are on at the moment, and once downloaded, insert a blank floppy disk, and then double click on the downloaded file and it will extract the files to the floppy disk

Once done, insert the floppy into the PC that is to have Win98 installed, format the drive again, using the Start computer without CD support option

Restart the computer then use the Start computer with cd rom support
Type setup at the E:\>

Did it give you a warning Number at all?

You might want to try giving your disk a clean
