I am trying to restore a comp running 98
NOt sure what happened only that by boss no longer has a comp
right now i am at the dos screen with a a:\ prompt
i tried running a start up
i tried running a boot disk
how do i get to read from the a drive to run the program off the disk

please help

Welcome :)

At the A:\ prompt type
dir c: /p/o
then press enter.

Check to see if there is a Windows <DIR> folder and Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.
This will give you an indication of if Windows98 is still installed on the drive.

i can see that the windows and config files are there

how do i get the boot disk to start - or the start up disk to run

At the A:\> prompt type the following:

C: (hit <enter>)
cd windows (hit <enter>)
win (hit <enter>)

Does it boot?

To boot from a boot disk the boot order in the BIOS must be set to boot from the Floppy first. A boot disk will only get you to the A:\> prompt
