where has my sound gone

I am no computer whizz and cannot figure out why all of a sudden why we have no sound at all including from the cd rom if a cd is put in. only sound now is the dial up tone otherwise its silent. Maybe the kids have been somewhere the should not have been. Is there an easy way to install it back of fix it. many thanks

You may need to re-install your sound card drivers
Insert your windows disk
Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Device Manager

You may see an exclamation mark by your sound card in Sound, Video and Game Controllers section

If so,
right click it and click Properties
Click Driver Tab

Click Update driver
Click ok

Ok well have you checked you volume controls? They can make it to where you can only hear your dialtone or where you hear nothing. They can be found at the tool bar to your bottem left and the Icon with a little box in light sea green or baby blue. It has a volume control with red,yellow and green on the icon. So when you see it douple click on it. It should open up to a huge volume control panel and then look to see if there is anything muted. That can be one answer to your problem..
