Does the BIOS detect the drive?
It should show on the screen when you first turn on the PC.

A test is to use a Windows Startup disk to boot the PC.
Choose to boot with CD-ROM support.
When in DOS insert a CD into the Drive and type
D:
then press enter.
(when booting a message will tell you what drive letter your CD-ROM is. If it is not drive D then change accordingly.)

If your CD-ROM is working then you should get no error.
If you get an error then it's probably a hardware fault.

Go HERE

Download the file: Windows 98 Custom, No Ramdrive

Once it is downloaded double click on the file and it will extract a bunch of files to a floppy (have a clean floppy in the drive when you double click this file).

Now shut the computer down.

Reboot with this floppy (you may have to set the boot order in SETUP to floppy first).

Watch the screen it should find the cdrom and assign a driver letter to it, probably E: or mayube R:

If it does, then you will end up at the A:\> now type the letter assigned to your cdrom drive e.g.

R: (hit <enter>) put a cd in then type

dir (hit<enter>)

does it read the cdrom????

Wink Whats next?

Hello, Im having the same problem. My system is Micron p3 running at 450mhz. I have a Samsung Hard Drive and a NEC CDR 3001a CD player. I did the boot up from A and it indicated that R was my cd drive. I loaded a disk and it was able to read it. What do I do next?
