Hi there,
I was in the forums six months ago and thankfully ironed out all my windows problems at the time,I'm hopeing to do the same now.
I'm running win 98se and when I attempt to defrag or run scandisk thorough I get the error that a program is writing to the disk and the program I'm using stops and restarts, never finishing.
Before I attempt to run these programs I manually shut down all programs except explorer.
I'm stumped as to why this is happening . :(

Start your computer in safe mode and then run defrag. When you see "Starting windows 98" press f8 key and then select safe mode. This prevents programs from starting and starts with a minimum of drivers loaded it should allow you to run those programs without any problems.

Safe mode doesnt start up,at no time do I see starting windows.I've tried pressing f8 through entire process ,nothing happens.

Instead of pressing F8, try holding down the Ctrl key through the entire process.....hopefully that will invoke the Windows Startup Menu from which you can then choose Safe Mode.

That did it Greta thank you.
Got it running no problem in safe mode.

You're very welcome, MaCready :D
I always run Scandisk and Defragmenter in Safe Mode when working on WIN9x rigs.
