Windows Me is not a new Windows version; the user interface makes the program look like Windows 2000, but "under the hood" it's still Windows 9x code.
New in Windows Me are:
System Restore function
A new TCP/IP stack
Windows Media Player 7
Internet Explorer 5.5
Movie Maker application for recording, editing, publishing, and organizing audio and video content
No Real mode DOS
Remove Help from the Start Menu
In Windows Me there is finally an easy way to remove Help from the Start Menu:
Goto the start menu and click on run, then type regedit.
Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
Right-click an open area in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name it NoSMHelp
Double-click this entry and give it a value 1
Exit RegEdit and restart Windows
Hibernate Won't Work
If your system doesn't want to Hibernate, check your Windows folder for a file named nohiber.txt. This file will contain information why Windows won't operate Hibernate.
In most cases, a suggestion will be offered as to how to proceed and be able to use hibernate.
Start Menu and Taskbar Tweaks
You can easily configure your Start Menu & TaskBar on Windows Me. Right-click on the Taskbar, select Properties and select the Advanced tab.
The Start Menu items which can be toggled on/off are:
Display Favorites
Display Logoff
Display Run
Enable dragging and dropping
Expand Control Panel
Expand Dial-Up Networking
Expand My Documents
Expand My Pictures
Expand Printers
Scroll Programs
The Taskbar items which can be toggled on/off are:
Display shortcut menu on right-click
Enable moving and resizing
If you decide to disable the Display shortcut menu on right-click, you will need to use Start > Settings > Taskbar to access the Taskbar properties.
Install Microsoft Backup
Microsoft removed MS Backup as an option during Setup, so you won't even find it in Add/Remove Programs. You can still install it, provided you have the Windows Me CD-ROM:
Using Explorer, go to the \ADD-ONS\MSBackup\ folder on the Windows Me CD
Run msbexp.exe file to install MS Backup
That's all! the shortcut to MS Backup can be found in Programs > Accessories > System Tools
Compressed Folders
The new Compressed Folder feature works similar to the WinZip utility, but it's built right into Windows Me. You no longer need to download and use WinZip (or any other 3rd party ZIP utility) to create file archives on your hard drive.
To create a Compressed Folder in Windows Explorer, right click an empty space, choose New and select Compressed Folder. This will create a folder icon with a zipper on it.
You can copy (or drag/drop) files to this folder, they will be compressed "on the fly". If you open the Compressed Folder, you can see such information as the original file size, the compressed size and the compression ratio (among other things).
