Ok I have a compaq presario 1700. It came with windows me, but I installed windows xp. I have to restore my computer using the "quick restore" cd rom. However the quick restore won't work with windows xp because it was meant for windows me. Is there a way I can restore my computer to windows me????

Have you tried the CD yet?

In my experience a Restore CD will wipe what ever is on the drive to what even is on the restore CD.
So even if you have XP installed, when you run the restore CD it wil wipe the drive and install Windows ME.


Have a check through the documentation.

I tried it but the quick restore cd won't work because of the windows xp? You would think it would work but it won't. I need to format my drive for windows me....but I can't do that either

If you want to format the drive, which will wipe all data then you can do it from a Startup Disk.

You can create one of these or download one from http://www.bootdisk.com
goto bootdisk page and download the Windows ME disk.

Boot from it and at the DOS prompt type
format c:
then press OK

Reboot with the Restore CD and it should start the Setup.

I had the same problem. I upgraded to XP from ME and found that my computer didn't have enough RAM to run XP reliably. I tried all of the things listed and it didn't work. Even if you try to format your C drive it wont let you from DOS. Honestly, I can't recall how exactly I did it, but I just kept at it. I'll do my best to remember, just know that it is very doable, just really annoying.
