Have you tried reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol ?
Also check to make sure the modem has no conflicts in device manager.
I would also run a thorough virus scan.

Are the phone lines in Chandigarh of good quality ? Try this lift the receiver at your client's place and dial any one number,(except whatever number would be reserved for contacting an operator)and listen closely. If you hear any hissing, crackling, popping etc. or if you hear any background conversations on the line that is likely the cause of the problem.
have you tried locating the latest drivers for that modem and installing them ?
Keep us posted.
