Hello again people, another problem I’m trying to solve if you don’t mind helping out.

I go to control panel>install/uninstall>windows setup. Up pops an applet says

“Rundll32,

An error has occurred in your program, to keep working click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program click close, you will lose information entered since your last save”.

I close that applet then I get another comes straight at me again.

Rundll32 has caused an error in SetupXdll, rundll will now close

There must be a solution out there somewhere.

Thanks in advance

Hi kmw,

If you have used a registry cleaner (EasyCleaner or RegCleaner, for example), hopefully it has an "Undo" function. Run the "Undo" function and use its option to restore the item that has VarLDID in it.

Ok problem solved, one from another forum sent me the files to replace the damaged ones, same solution as yours Greta. Thanks.

"Your setupx.dll error is usually the result of first having deleted some
empty folders in Program Files that were placed there when Win Me was
installed that are used for optional components of Win Me and then using a
registry cleaner such as EasyCleaner which removed some necessary entries
required for Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup to function because the
target folders were no longer present. You can avoid this happening in future
by not deleting such folders and similarly not deleting any values in the key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up\VarLDID"

I have this same problem on a customer's computer, and I did use RegSeeker on it, but even after restoring the registry backup, I still get this error. I did reboot. I have also tried restoring the rundll32 and the setupx file, no help there either.

I don't know if this is related or not, but this system also refuses to display the folder pane when exploring the system, that folder is solid grey. I found one fix for this on the net, for Win2000, a registry edit, but it did not apply to ME, so I'm stumped on that one as well.

Hi urnsbay,

Copy the following text, what is between the dotted lines, into Notepad....then Save the Notepad file as VarLDID.reg
Once done and saved, double-click on teh VarLDID.reg file and click on Yes in the ensuing dialogue box.

What or where was the registry edit for WIN2K that you mentioned.

I tried the reg fix that you gave me - no luck. It DID fix the problem I was having with the folders pane showing grey when Exploring the computer, but I still cannot access Windows Setup under Add/Remove Programs. I can't for the life of me find where I read about the registry fix for Win2K, I just went through all my history but can't find it. It was basically the same thing, but not quite - it did refer to the VarLDID. Next idea?
