windows Me won't complete a defrag it runs for hours so i downloaded a program called scan defrag :nope: still no defrag it keeps saying something is writing to the drive any idea's

Hello xtensive welcome to CTH!
Try running a thorough scandisk before you run the defrag.
Probably you have something running in the background that is changing the contents of the hard drive while defragmenting...
Shut down everything running in the back ground with crt-alt-del, except "system tray" and "windows explorer".
-Go to start type, "msconfig" and selective startup and stop unneeded applications from loading on the start
-Also try to defragment in safe mode.
