having real trouble with W2K (SP1) Phone Dialer. It refuses to dial an ordinary phone number to the telephone network via the modem. Trying to dial with e.g. Lotus Organiser - it rings once (and the recipient hears the ring) then drops the line. DUN works fine, Hyperterminal appears to work fine. Modem and drivers therefore appear to be OK. There is nothing on MS Support about this at all. Error message appears as soon as I try dialing with Phone Dialler: Operation: Placing a call Details: Failed trying to connect. Does the device have power and dial tone if necessary? Error: The dial modifier is not supported. Modem manufacturer has told me that the modem should be OK with W2K. I am desperate for help, I use various programs (Organiser, Address Book etc.)to dial a number quite a lot. I can find no answer anywhere and would really appreciate a solution.

Just a thought as I do not know the state of the phone network in India let alone in Chandigarh but is the telephone system where you are attempting to connect from a digital system as opposed to an analogue setup? If so that could explain some of the difficulty you are experiencing. Conventional dial-up phone modems don't work on digital phone lines.

DOH!! I just re-read your post.I hadn't twigged to your comment that Hyperterminal works. Therefore my speculations about your phone system don't hold any water.

1) Simple analogue exchange, as far as I know.

2) DUN and HotFax MessageCentre both work without problem. The latter is an answerphone, speakerphone & fax program and will direct dial the phone system from its phonebook without problem. It presumably takes control of the modem without Windows Phone Dialler help.

With DUN and Internet connection I get good, reliable connection - 48,000 bps connect speed, no dropped lines etc.

But any program including Phone Dialler itself, that tries to dial using Windows Phone Dialler fails.

I don't think this is a modem or telephone system problem (i.e not hardware)

I have checked with the people and they cannot presently see a reason why W2K Phone Dialler shouldn't work with the modem (Accura V90 Speakerphone Internal (GB).

Some programs, like Lotus Organiser will dial and drop the line after 1 ring. Phone Dialler itself usually refuses to dial, but might do the 1 ring if accessed from another program first.

Hope this may help. I can get no info about setting up Phone Dialler it is set to installation defaults.
