Unhappy CD Rom Not Recognized

Hello Again My Friends,

My brother in law ask me to assist him. Here is what I know: Micron PC model se440bx2-atx, intel pentium iii clocked at 450mhz. Samsung HD 8.4g. NEC CDR model 3001a. Assuming originally a network pc because it use to belong to a company. Brother in law installed windows 98, But CD unit does not function. Not listed with drive letter anywhere. Replaced cable from cd to board. No change. Replace cd unit with new one. No change. Re-installed old unit. Booted from dos to A: to R: and was able from DOS to list contents of disk in cd rom bay. Remove battery and reinstalled to see if this would work. No change. BIOS looks like it is detecting unit. What to do? What to do?

If DOS recognizes CDROM, then Windows is not loading the driver for it.

Check you controllers in device manager:

Right Click "My Computer" then to properties, Device Manager

Under your IDE controllers are there three entries? What are they?
