hellooOOo people.

my name is mort.

:D :D :D :D

and i think i have a problem.. :)

or something.

with...

color profiles.

okiee.. well.. i'm an aspiring photoshop user and web designer, i bought a book called "Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Classroom in a Book".. and i"m up to .. cahapter 11

yay.

but .. not yay.. sort of.

this particular chapter deals with using adobe gamma to create an ICC profile for your monitor.

okkieee so it seems.. a lot of my darker graphics don't display properly on other peoples system.. due to what seemed to be a lack of brightness on my monitors behalf. (book says its beacsue my screen phosphors are slowly.. doing something bad)

anyhoo.

if you're familar with adobe gamma i ran the control panel and adjusted my monitor as per instruction in this book (which is sort of irrelavant to you guys i think anyywa.. i'll mention it :D).

and i created an ICC profile.

i decided to call it 'mishysmybeanbag.icc'

my monitor was bright again :D and everything was happy.

so i went and previewed an ezboard with darker colors, and i saw them and things.

i was curious as to how this profile would load upon startup so i rebooted.. and it didn't load.

so i went to control panel>display>settings>advanced>color management and the profile was there..

i clicked set as default (being the only profile there probably was a waste of time) and rebooted.

no change :

so i went into adobe gamma and tried to move a slider (that would adjust the monitors midtone brightness) and no change? so i loaded an application i have called 'power strip' and .. then clicked the slider and it adjsuted the monitor.. since then i cannot make any change with sliders in adobe gamma
unless powerstrip is loaded.

so powerstrip is loaded now..

so i went back into adobe gamma and clicked a slider not changing a setting, just selecting it.. and the screen brightened up instantly to what it was califbrated to.

i press cancel and its still bright

open windows explorer and dims again.

so open adobe gamma again clicked a slider, monitor is bright again.

exit.. dims again, open gamma, click slider, bright, close gamma, open explorer.. doesn't dim..

10 minutes later open another app and it dims :D

also when i change res it dims.

oh .. when i say dim i mean goes back to what it was before it was calibrated.

ugh.

annyway.. i've never worked with color profiles before and since seeing the change it made on my monitor .. :D

it made me go :D

but yeah.. uhm..

i wasn't sure if i should post this on any other forum like apps or graphics and web design but.. uhm.

yeah.

i'm using a default plug and play monitor drivers and have an SiS 6326 (like mishy!)

.. ugh

help would be greatly appreciated .. and as a reward i'll rename my color profile from 'mishysmybeanbag.icc' to 'yournamemybeanbag.icc' !!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

:O

Hi Mort!
I know Adobe profiles well. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Mishy asked me to take a look at your post.

I can absolutely tell you the problem is not with the Adobe Gamma or any other calibration software. It sounds to me like it's a problem with Windows holding your preferences.

Once a monitor is calibrated there should be no reason to ever have to touch the Adobe Gamma unless you change hardware/drivers.

I'm no windows expert so I really don't know how to go about telling you to fix this.

Sorry But the best I can do is guarantee it's not a calibration problem. It's an operating system problem.

Hopefully someone can explain how to guarantee that preferences are held for Windows.

I'm picking the problem will be that you are using "default plug and play" monitor driver instead of identifying your monitor.
Windows seems to be "re-plugging" the monitor every reboot. If you identify it Windows should remember what you tell it. At the moment you are telling Windows to make up it's own "mind" what sort of monitor you've got.

Hihiayihnayrhg

Not too much luck on the color profile.. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I did a fresh install of win2k and tried to adjust the monitor with adobe gamma, it wouldn't even adjust unless I had previously loaded powerstrip.. :O

installing monitor drivers was no help.. but if i load powerstrip, unload it then go to adobe gamma, it will load a profile, i save the profile (and overwrite existing one)

and it holds.....

so.. i do taht each time i startup

thank god i'm running win2k and not win98 http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

anuyway.. when i get new system i'll let you know if it will hold.. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
