View Full Version : Scandisk Trouble

Because I wanted to do a defrag before I went to bed, I first did a disk cleanup and tried to run Scandisk.

It refused and said that it had had to restart 10 times because Windows or some other program was trying to write to the disk.

Nothing other than Explorer and Systray were running. I then went into Safe Mode and tried it there. I got the same message.

Any suggestions?

see if anything here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q222/4/69.asp&NoWebContent=1) helps.

I'll try their suggestions first thing in the morning. Thanks and I'll let you know what happens.

No luck.

I tried everything they suggested and am still getting the message that something is writing to the disk.

I checked my startups and all looks well there too.

Here's a HJT log. Maybe something evil has snuck into my system?

Hi buddy...that's a clean log...

Thanks Dammit.

I wonder why my scandisk won't run then?

Don't know...you seem to have been trying all the right things....I think we will chalk up another ME screwup :disgust:

jessek

Well, I can't just chalk it up to that, because I can't afford a new computer.

My system gets really slow if I don't defrag regularly, and defrag won't run without a scandisk first.

I'd appreciate any ideas anyone can come up with please!!!

I know buddy....I'm sure I have seen a fix somewhere....if I find it I will get back

Any more ideas? Dammit? Anyone?

I don't want to appear impatient, but I'm really getting "fragged" here, lol!

I'm going to bump this up one more time.

If no-one has any suggestions, can someone at least suggest somewhere else I can go to ask for help?

Thaanks.

the only other things I can think of is to

1.Disable the screensaver and anti virus program and unplug the cable/DSL modem (if any).

2. Delete the files in the Recycle Bin, the browser cache (Temporary Internet Files folder if using MSIE) and the Temp, History and Recent folders. Corrupt files can cause scandisk problems.

Thanks Renegade and Dammit. I've discovered that I have the PE Parite.A and B virus so I'm going to ask for removal help in the Cyber Safety forum.

Thanks.

Hi again...I thought I had a fix for ME tucked away somewhere..but I didn't. :(

As I said before you seem to have tried all the correct workarounds.
Best I can offer is a free defrag utility DISKEEPER LITE (http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/system/fwdisktools.html) Have a look....it might be worth a shot ;)
