View Full Version : migration from win 98 to win 2k

Hi.
There is an issue that came up with a friend of mine. This is what it is:
It seems that someone who is a professional told my friend that win 98 and win 2k "intermingle" files (I think he meant use soem common system files etc.). He was told that one could just delete some files/directories/sub-directories and install win 2k over win 98.
Now as far as my knowledge goes, win 98 (being and desktop system) and win 2k (a network system with multi-users) do not have the same architecture. Such an UPGRADE is not possible. One would have to take a backup of files, uninstall win 98 and then install win 2k...and copy the stored files to do a migration.
The other option is to make a dual boot system (which is not recommended).
Can anyone support this conflict of understanding with concrete reasons?

Hello paras
Windows 2000 can utilise either the FAT32 or the NTFS file system. In a dual boot configuration using FAT32 W98 and W2k can see and access each other's files. If W2k is formatted as NTFS it will be able to see and access its own and W98's files but W98 will not see any of the files on the NTFS partition.
Windows 2000 can be installed as an upgrade over Windows 98 without difficulties. The installation program offers the option of doing a clean install or of upgrading your 95/98 installation - as a matter of fact the install program actually recommends that option so that your applications and data are not lost. I am enough of a Luddite to prefer a clean install http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
W2k dual boots nicely with either 95 or 98. Just be sure that when setting up a dual boot configuration that you install the older OS first. While it is possible to have 95/98 and W2k on the same partition - it is preferable that the OS's be on separate partritions. I hope this clarifies the issue.

hi there.
there is one more thing i wanted to know in regard to this thread of discussion.
suppose i already have a win 98 and win 2k dual boot that's working fine. now there are some files that win 98 and win 2k intermingle. however, now i do not have need for win 98 and i would like to recover the disk space that is being used by win 98 files that are no longer in use. i want to delete these files/directories. however, i'm a little undecided about which files i could simply delete without affecting win 2k.
i do not want to go through a total clean and fresh install of win 2k. is there some way by which i can just delete the unused win 98 files and have only win 2k on my system? at least some of the win 98 files which are no longer needed?
thanks

this is a quote from one other forum members and i thought it would contribute to this discussion.
"I've not done this so use this info as an assumption. It's the opposite of removing win2k from dual boot.
-------------------
Remove Win98 from boot.ini. uninstall all win98 programs. boot into win2k and delete the win98 folder ([X]:\windows).
If something messes up, boot to a win98 startup diskette with cd support and start win2k setup. choose "repair".
-------------------
we went into 98 and uninstalled the programs there as suggested. when we rebooted into
2000 we were missing many of the programs which we had impacted by uninstalling
in 98. further, we are confident that there are quite a few files in the c:\windows directory which are in use by Win2000 and that the results would be bad if we simply deleted the directory.
is anyone SURE about which files and directories can be deleted in win 98.
one further piece of information that i did not mention is that the system is a dual boot with win 98 and win 2k.
i would appreciate any SURE help.

I'd personally do a fresh install of win2k http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
