Hi there. I was using my computer on Saturday, with several Internet Explorer windows open all at once. My computer froze up and upon a reboot, all i get is a blue screen. I've tried several times to get it boot up, with no success. It turns on, shows the Dell screen, then shows the Windows ME screen, then acts like its loading the desktop, but only shows a blue screen. I have a mouse pointer on the screen, but cannot do anything.

I've tried to boot up in safe mode and found the same outcome. My computer messed up awhile back and i had this thread to help fix it:

Is this a re-occurring problem? Or maybe a new virus out? I just ran HiJack this not too long ago on this machine and fixed those errors.

Please help.

Thanks

Hi,
If you can't access safemode then I would suggest a repair install.

You need the Product Key.
Boot up with a Windows Startup disk and at the prompt type
c:\windows\options\install\setup.exe
then press return.

Will this wipe out everything i have saved on my computer?

Is this the same as using the rescue disk?

thanks!!

No,
A Repair install of the OS will re-install the System Files but will keep your data, programs, settings etc.

There are different types of Rescue / Restore CD's. Most of the, will wipe your system and restore to factory settings.

Okay,

I found the following CDs in my computer pack:

1. CD for reinstalling device drivers and using diagnostics

2. Backup: Dell-Installed Programs

3. Reinstallation CD WMe

which one?

I also created a ME rescue disk awhile back, can i use that?

sorry for all the questions!

Hi,
What I suggested was a Repair Install, you don't need any CDs.
(You do need the Operating System Produect Key)

The CD's you have are part of the DELL package.
I cannot tell you if the Reinstallation CD WME will wipe your drive or not.
Maybe a DELL user could tell you.

A ME Rescue floppy disk is what you need to boot into DOS, also called a Startup Disk.

i tried to do the windows\options\install\setup.exe and it said the path was not specified. wouldn't work.

so i tried scanreg/restore and picked an early date when my computer was working. It rebooted and my desktop is back! But i got this message at startup:

Error loading C:\\ windows\image.dll

whats this about?

thanks

Hi,

Boot from the floppy disk
At the A:\> prompt

type
c:
then press enter

then
cd windows
enter

then
cd options
enter

then
cd install
enter

then
dir setup
enter

If the directory doesn't exist then you will probably have to use your DELL CD's.
I don't know if they will wipe your drive.
Maybe a Dell user will confirm it.
