How can I free up some of my system resources? Right now my computer says it is running with 65% resources free. Is that normal. My dad thinks it is supposed to be at about 80%. If this is true, then what can I do to free things up? Any suggestions?

65% percent isn't too bad, but there may be spyware using resources. Have you run any programs such as Adaware or Spybot? Also you may want to run an Hijack This to see what else may be using up resources.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp make sure you run any updates they may offer
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ download the free adaware update that and run it.

Thanks...I downloaded and ran them both and now my resources are up to 75%! They found about 25 things running on my computer that shouldn't have been! Everything is better now.

"Right now my computer says it is running with 65% resources free."
Yes, but what is "right now?" What does it say immediately after bootup?
65% would be too low. But after a half-day of normal useage, 65% is quite good. There is no way to answer your question given the info we have.

Everything is better, but not necessarily good. 75% right after bootup? Fair. Not so good. Tell us what it is right after bootup.

Morning Angel. go to this link http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html to half way down the page to 'official dowloads' there you will find hijack this. When you click on the link a dialog box will come up, click 'open' and it will open hijack this for you, then you can run a 'scan', then save log. If you need help posting the log, let us know. That will help us know what else might be hogging resources.

I shut down the computer and restarted and went immediately to resources and it said 73%. I guess maybe that's not so good. I posted the Hijack log, hopefully it will help.

Well, PreciousAngel, you've got a LOT of stuff running that doesn't need to run. Things like LoadQm can be deleted completely. And RealAudio and MSN Messenger are programs which can be started from the start menu when they are needed.
Stmgr.exe is needed for System Restore, and AHQTB is probably your audio control panel, but other than Systray there really is nothing there that is necessary to run Win ME. And all those Works and Office things starting up when you boot the computer are resource hogs. Can't you simply start the programs you need from Start Menu when you need them?
Try unchecking everything in msconfig except the 3 things I indicated above (just to experiment), and then add things back you might need if something doesn't work right. It'll also give you the opportunity to see how well your computer will run with 90% resources at bootup. ;)

How do you go about checking your resources. It sounds like I'm having a similar problem.
PreciousAngel

In order to check how much of your system resources are free, you need to go into your start menu and open up your control panel. From there, you click on "system" and then go to the tab that says "performance". It should tell you what your resources are.
