My system will not boot up. I get 2-different error messages:
1-Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted
2-Cannot find or load required file KRNL386.exe. System Halted.

I insert the boot disk & try to do a system restore by typing C:\windows\command\scanreg/restore. I choose the date & reboot. It tells me that it successfully restored to a known good restore file.
Still nothing. Same error messages.

When I try to boot off the boot disk with CD support, it keeps telling my there is an error with CD drive, check connections & try again.

Somewhere out in this cyberworld is a solution to my problems. I would like to thank anyone in advance for any greatly needed help before I chunck this PC in the can.
There has to be a simple fix some where. Once I get it to boot, ME is coming off & XP is going on.

Thanks!!!

Hi,

Scanreg /Restore will only restore the registry, but it seems that you have a missing file.

What is the exact error for the CD-ROM?

You say that you are removing ME. Do you need to get into it to backup or something?

Oh, that's great -- because you have damaged or incorrectly-configured hardware or a corrupted or deleted system file, you're going to get rid of Windows ME! That'll show 'em! ;) (So few people even know that Windows ME periodically fries chips and deletes system files. So bad, it is.....)
By the way, lots of luck with XP.

:fyi:
I have XP on 2-systems & no problems with ether for over a year(since new).
This pc was given to me & previous owner had nothing but problems with ME. Spent more time on MS help than enjoying it.

When trying to Boot with CD, it keeps giving me a message the "CD rom drive not found. Please check connetions & restart computer"
