View Full Version : Automatic Shutdown after 10 minutes?

I've just had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows due to the PARITE virus.

Since reinstallation, however, if I leave the computer for more than about 10 minutes, I come back to find the screen black. The tower still has a green light, but the only way to get back up and running is to hit the restart button on the tower.

Is there some kind of automatic shutdown built into Windows Me that I need to disable.

All is well, as long as I don't leave the system idle for more than a few minutes.

Check power options, to see if the hibernate box is checked, Click the hibernatetab, and then clear the Enable hibernate support check box.

See if that helps.

Yup, they were set for 10 minutes to shut the monitor and 1 hour for the hard drive.

I wonder why they were set up like that this time, when the last 2 times I had to reinstall windows, they weren't?

You don't know how much I appreciate the fact that you understand what I've gone through over the last few days. I am absolutely frazzled.

THanks for understanding. And if I can just work these last little bugs out, I can get back to reinstalling all the programs I lost.

BTW, do you think it's safe to allow my teenage son to start using MSN to chat with his friends again. He's really itching to get back, but I don't want to let him if that was the cause of the PARITE virus!

If you have a way of stopping the kids from getting on the computer and them not doing what you told them not,,, I want to know about it.. I have 3 kids my youngest understands better than the older ones.

Anyway I wont blab about my kids,,,
Just make sure your covered on the obvious ones, windows crytical updates,AV updated. fire wall, check with ad-aware and spybot requarely, take a run through the download section here at CTH lot of very good stuff in there.

Hope that helps

Thanks again don77!

I had already installed AVG, ZAP, Mailwasher, Spybot and Adaware but had totally forgotten Windows Update. I used to have an auto reminder for that, but hadn't remembered that by re-installing Windows, I was taking it back to the year 2000, lol.
