Blue screen
Recently, when I start up the computer, it loads everything up, and then it just freezes. I click on stuff with the mouse and nothing happens. Then, all of a sudden a blue screen pops up and says that the system is busy and to either restart the computer or press any key. If I press any key, I just get another blue screen that says the same thing. If I press control-Alt-Del nothing happens. I have to manually shut down the computer and reboot. What is causing this? It doesn't do it everytime I boot up but it does do it about every other day. Any ideas? You guys have come up with solutions for everything else so far. Thank you.

What did you do, PreciousAngel? Here you were, riding along with 91% system resources, apparently pleased with everything, and now you say "recently" you are getting these blue screens. What does "recently" mean? What did you change or install? Time to rely on that famous common sense of yours, PA!

This is my dad's computer I have been trying to help him out with. I have no idea what he does to this thing when I am not around! I have only gotten the blue screen twice, but he says he gets it pretty often and that it just started recently. Trying to get my dad to determine just when "recently" is is pretty much an impossibility! I am doing my best here. I will continue to think about this one, but if u have any clues, please point me in the right direction. Thanks!

So this is a different computer from the one you had showing 91% sys resources at bootup? Or the same one?

tell about your computer, cpu, ram, harddrive size/space available. Are you able to reboot into safe mode? If so, try restoring to a previous restore point prior to when the problem started.
Even if you are successful restoring to a restore point, still post the info about your computer, also download, install in own folder, run and post the log from hijackthis and someone will look at it and make sure there are no problems there.

She knows how to use HijackThis, and is a few steps ahead of you. My post should have given you a clue that there is some history here.

same computer
This would be the same computer. I moved back in with my parents about 2 weeks ago. They have had this computer for about 5 years. My dad had never even defraged the hard drive on it, so I have been working at fixing things with it since I got here. The blue screen issue has only happened to me twice on it, but my dad says it has happened to him often. When it happened to me, I manually shut down the PC and when I rebooted, everything was ok. I am just curious what might be the cause. The computer is a Dell Dimension XPS B1000. It has a 38.1 GB harddrive. 7.5 GB is used, 30.6 GB is free. 128 MB RAM. Pentium III processor.
Chanter...do u think doing a restore would be the best option? And should I go ahead and post another Hijack log afterward or no? |

If it just started happening recently a restore might be a good idea. But if your Dad says this has been going on for a long time, a restore isn't really going to do you much good. As to what it could be? It could be so many things -- hardware, software, a driver -- that your best bet is to do what you did before. Go into msconfig > Startup and uncheck everything but Systray and see if you can get it to freeze. If it doesn't freeze, put one check at a time back in until you get it to freeze or give you the blue screen. And, if you don't have a Win Me boot disk, make one now: put a floppy in your A Drive, Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Startup Disk > Create Disk. You may need it later.
