First time with linux, please help

Okay, so I just installed Mandrake 10. Everything went smooth there but when I choose to boot into linux, and try to use "startx" so i get a gui, i get an error. It says "XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer)". It mentions a problem with xfree86. Does anyone know what I can do about this? Thanks alot.

Well the fatal IO error "connection reset by peer" is just leeting you know that X will not start due to an error. I would be more helpful is you could post the actual error msg you get about "XFree86" as that is were the problem will be. Its more likely than not a graphics card error or a config error but I'd have to see the actual error to be sure so post back with that info thanks....

Did you install it on a laptop? If so, this might help:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-lapto.../msg00075.html

Or post a copy of the file (or files if you have both):
/etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(view them with the command "vi /etc/X11/XF86Config" and "vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4")
And then post it here.
You could also make the files again, just to see whether you ****ed up something. Move the files to your home folder, or just rename 'em. Then run "XFdrake" to set it up again.

Or try to reconfig your vid card.

good luck.

Well, tht means you just made a new vi file, which is just a textfile. No harm done, you just exit the file without saving by the following command:
Code:
:q!
Now you're prolly at the command line again, and you can go ahead and look for your XF86Config.
For example, mine is in
/etc/X11/XF86Config
Type in the following command:
Code:
 locate XF86Config
Then, just view the file again
Code:
 vi /whereevertheXF86Configislocated
and paste the result here.

(usefull commands: http://linuxbook.orbdesigns.com/ch17/btlb_c17.html )
