you download a distro fist. then you'll write The iso to a cd, and then you'll boot with an install menu, which will prolly give you a partition tool.
just give the logical partition an ext3 file system.
And keep a bit of space left for swap.

Hi, a complete newbie here, so please don't get mad if I'm asking a very stupid question! . Well Lozil how did you manage to install in that logical partition? I also used disk druid and then selected a partition, deleted it, then I choose mount point as '/' , File system type: ext2. But when I click ok, it gives a warning message that I should create a boot disk. Says my current architecture might not boot linux directly. By the way, I have Windows XP installed. And I'm trying to install Linux 8.0. Any suggestions anyone?

First Things First BACKUP YOUR DATA!
now boot
Then From disc Druid Just select That logical partition delete it,
then click on create new then select the size and file system, and i did not bothered about that warning which came my way! So be positive and go on And Hope you Use Grub As boot maneger
Thats all!
