hello-i am trying to install nt4 on a toshiba tecra 720. it has cd onboard but the boot priority is fdd or hdd. i reformatted the drive and have the 3 boot discs. with a disc in a drive, the message is wrong system disc. with the cd in it's drive and dos at d:\, nothing i type will work. i thought setup.exe was all i needed. every site i visit on this problem, the posters are further into the installation than i can get. i need nt4 for a specific app to run. thanks for reading, chuck.

How did you format the drive? NTFS or FAT?

NT4 does not support FAT 32.

What size Hard Drive?

i don't recall ntfs. i always say no at fat32, so i assume it's fat16. the hard drive is 1.3g, oe for a 720. ram is 144k. thanks, chuck.

Try different boot disk.

You can download the 3 required boot disks HERE (http://www.oldstuff.myagora.net/powerload/bootdisk.htm)

Your's could be corrupted. At least this would rule out your boot disks.

i've been there and tried that from bootdisk and another site a few times, each time with new, formatted floppies. no luck. thanks, chuck.

ok this may be a daft question, but can't you change the boot device priority in BIOS setup to let it boot from the NT CD?

at the d: prompt do dir and see if setup.exe is there.

Have you investigated the compatibility settings in XP to see if you can persuade this legacy app to work on it btw?

you could try make setup dikettes from the NT CD itself

run the following command from a commandpromt
(preferrably from the 386 folder you find winnt.exe in)
winnt /ox

or, run winnt32 /ox in a win9x environment

I thought winnt itself would launch setup too... so, if you have access to the CDROM booting off a floppy, you could try winnt from within the 386 folder

an article I just read said to use winnt /f /b

(they too recommend to copy the 386 folder to hard drive, and run setup (winnt) from the copy on hard disk
this is the article
http://www.wilsonmar.com/1wntins.htm

I looked for the available winnt options switches

you said;
with the CD in the drive, and DOS at D:\>_ you could not get it going...

I assumed D: is the CDrom in the CDrom-drive
If that is the case, you could get going.

dir D: should show you files on the CDrom.
the NT4 CD has a folder called 386

and if that folder shows, you can run D:\386\winnt /ox
(with three diskettes ready, for making setup diskettes)
or you can run D:\386\winnt and see wether that launches setup for you
