View Full Version : Win95 DCC to Win2K?

Greetings, O Gurus & Wizards!

I need to migrate data files from an ancient Win95 machine with no real peripherals (CD burner, etc.) to a new Win2K machine. It looked to me that the best way to do this (without seriously disrupting the hardware) was via direct cable connection between the two machines using the parallel ports. The software for doing this is built in to both OSs so, I thought, no sweat! Silly me!

I can get the machines to see each other and connect to each other in each direction—that is, either machine will agree to be host and allow guest connections from the other machine. However, when I make the Win95 machine the host (since that's where all the files are), the Win2K machine won't show the shared volumes even though it reports a successful 4 Mb/sec connection. When I try to go the other way, the Win2K machine allows the Win95 machine to connect but demands a password even though I've specifically told it to accept this incoming connection without question. No password assigned to anything on the Win2K machine will allow the Win95 machine in! Grrrrrr.

I have finally resorted to physically moving the harddrives for now, but I'd like to get the DCC to work in the near future for these and other machines. Does anyone have any obvious ideas that I am overlooking?

I have installed all of the proper networking clients and protocols and I get no reported errors concerning them. Can you help further?

Thanks very much.

Chas.

P.S.: What's this "junior member" nonsense?

You should be able to get the Win2K machine to recognize the 95 by logging on to the 95 machine as the same user as the 2K machine. If you are Administrator on 2K then log on to 95 as Administrator with your 2K password.

Thanks for the reply.

The Win 95 machine is not set up with individual user accounts so I can't really log on as anyone in particular--can I?

The Win95 machine doesn't prompt me for a username or password. It just connects to the Win2K machine and the Win2K machine acknowledges a 4 Mb/sec direct connection. However, there are no shared volumes visible to browse.

Going the other way, the Win2K machine doesn't ask for a username--just a password. No matter what password I try (even the Admin.), it doesn't let me in. Frustrating, indeed.

Thanks again for the reply.

Try switching the 95 machine to Client for Microsoft Network in network properties and it should let you log in. Then log in as same user as on the 2K board. The 2K machine is looking for the password for the Admininstrator's default profile. The share you have on 2K is probably the Administrators default. If it is named C$, it is the default. You could try setting the share up for Everyone and giving it a different name adn see if 95 can get in, but by logging in as stated it will let you in to the Administrator's default share.
