View Full Version : Win2000 server random lockups

Hi Guys,

I'm having trouble with my Windows 2000 Advanced server machine. Randomly while using the machine it just freezes. No blue screen, no response from Ctrl-Alt-Del.

My machine is a 1.2ghz Athlon, VIA chipset motherboard w/ sound (AC97), Dual display GForce2 AGP & SiS 6326 PCI, 100mb NIC.

At first I thought it was my SiS card causing trouble as if I turned video acceleration off on it, it locked up a lot less, but every now and again it still locks up.

I've tried disabling my SiS card, turning all other (Video & Audio) acceleration off, making sure I have all the latest drivers / patches installed, but it still locks up regulary.

Does anybody know what could be causing this? Could it still be my SiS card, or is it likely to be something else (PCI bus problem? etc.)

Also what would be the best logging / diagnostic program to have running that might catch the error or at least give some indication as to the cause?

Thanks,

Andrew

What is the reason for two video cards?

Having a dual display makes web development much easier, especially doing databasing/asp at the same time.

The reason I'm using server edition is that it allows me to preview multiple sites on IIS 5, my machine is really a development platform rather then a dedicated server.

do you think this could be the problem? Tho I would've though that server edition would be more reliable then other Win2k versions.

PS. I'm not sure this'll help, but here's what the event logger makes of the crashes:

Event ID:6008 (every time)
Type: Error
Source: EventLog

(this is the last few crashes)

Do you have the lockup problems when you take the SIS card out? Lockup always seem to be video related so I was wondering what would happen if the SIS card was not only disabled but was not even present at all.
