I just saw a similar question in the linux forum and thought it would be interesting to know how others here learned about computers as a whole.
This sharing of info could help others educate themselves as they enter the wide world of computers and the problems they create.
So the question is...
How did you gain the wealth of knowledge that you are sharing with others here at cth?

My dad taught me some BASIC, and simple assembly when I was 8-10yrs old on a ZX Spectrum 48k. I then started writing very very simplistic adventure games ;)
That combined with wanting to do better in a football management game I got shortly after the above got me into learning code in greater detail and then on to giving myself 100 million quid to spend on players lol
Then had a couple of 486's which I used for DOS and some games.
Then fell into the games trap till I was 14ish and didn't touch a computer till I was 20 - this was my first experience of windows and the internet.

For my apprenticeship as a draughtsman/CAD operator I was in an office and basically a gofer and odd job man.
This included a fair amount of setting up PCs for the office.
Apparently the IT staff had better things to do.
Anyways, so my initial involvement was setting up NT4 workstations :)

I have been active since my first 8088 in the late 80's. Got involved with bbsing, became a sysop with my own board, and played alot of online games like tradewares. Got started with help forums on fidonet. I am self taught and have learned alot just by trying to help by researching the problem myself.
I believe the best way to learn a computer is by when you mess up, try fixin it yourself through searching for the solution before asking for help. It is amazing how much other stuff you find that can be used later when searching for a specific problem.

I dont know much about these things, but what I have learned is from being at boards like this one. Pretty much really got into these in November 2000 at Virtualdr, then got asked to come here. Was also going to about 10 other boards at the time. Amazing what you can learn if you read these threads and actually try this stuff on your own PC. (no telling how many times I wiped my PC clean while testing crap. It does pay to have a test machine. Which I plan on having one of these days....:D)
