Sound Card issue

okay, I have googled for days now trying to find out what the issue is with my sound card. (A good friend gave me a Sound Blaster Live! Model# SB0200, this came from a dell from his work place so it is a little differnt. They said that it did not work, but I just had to replace a component and now it works great in winXP) Linux Mandrake reads the sound card as a Sound Blaster Live! VALUE, If it is I do not know. But When I boot linux told me that something has crashed, something about digital output. I had the option to "try again" (would not start ever again, have to reinstall linux) or " Disable something that I forgot it's name" (Which I did just to boot) Now, I can play a CD in the My CD-RW drives, but when I go and use totem to play any thing that is digital file format, it will play though but no sound. I have changed the sound drivers with the following options. snd-emu10kl, emu10kl, audigy. I have tried all three, I still get no sound.

Any ideas? PLEASE!

Maybe this will work:
Tarball with drivers: ftp://www.se.opensound.com/pub/oss/l...386-v24.tar.gz
Install instructions: http://www.opensound.com/install_gzipped.html

I got that from www.opensound.com
Haven't tried it myself, one of my sound drivers works perfectly on windoze, and the other one kicks ass on linux.

Keep us updated!

Downloading it now, I'll let you know if it works. But everywere I go they say that there is no hope for this card. I Hope you just proved them wrong!

Plus, I have DSL on this computer. I have not yet set Mandrake to network for these two computers for file sharing. When I get this to my linux box, I'll fill you guys in.

Erm, I just took a closer look on the thing, and you're downloading oss over there, the open sound system. My bad, that is not gonna work. Still gonna see if there's another possibility, tho.

it seems as tho they're right, but you may have some luck with the new kernel (2.6.6. at www.kernel.org)
They're supporting a lot more pci stuff than 2.4 does.. tho, I wish you a whole lot of luck. :s

Exclamation

well, I was just going to mentioned that I have the 2.6 kernel. It is not 2.6.6, but it is 2.6.2. I hope that this version will work, if not I will upgrade. I found out that updating the kernel is not that hard! Now what? Is there a 2.6 driver?

Question Oh boy... I feel stupid

Okay new kernel is up and running better than ever. Compliling the kernel for your system is the best thing ever! You'll can actually "unlock" a few extras for your system. 2.6.6 compilied for my system, it now pulls some extra juice out of my PIII, but did not solve my sound issue.

I was going to open anouther tread, but I'd decided to ask here. I stumbled into a few problems, really simple problems. So simple I'm assamed to google it in front of my house hold If some could quicly post the answer, I would appriciate it! I know that I knew them, but for some reason I can't remember

PLEASE!!

Well, I wanted to know both. But I know that the sound card issue is a major issue, so that might be out of the question. But all I wanted to know is what was the bash command to delete a directory. Also, (this is the one that I'm assamed of) I can not log in as root. At the log in screen, It has my name and a login or shut down options. No where can I type. I know that both of these are simple fixes, that is why I'm assamed I even know I saw the answer to one of these here, but I can not find it, so I'm asking again.

Sorry that I did not post the minor issues on my pervious post, I must of been busy and forgot to include it.

More evidence that I'm human! leased:

Bash command to delete a dir:
"rmdir [dir]"
This will remove a empty dir. If you want to delete a dir which isn't empty, use "rm -rf [dir]"
Just be carefull not to do a "rm -rf /". This is the point where you've gotta be carefull and *not* take the name of root in vain.

If your login screen is a bash shell, then you can login as root. If it's not, well, you've gotta tell your wm to allow root to login at the boot.
I'm not familair with those fancy loginscreens, I just start X manually, that is, if I'm using X at all.
If you don't know what your logindisplay manager is, (you've got gnome display manager, and that kdething..), copy the dmesg here a bit.
It's bound to be in there.

If I'm totally missing your point here, and you just want to know how you login as root in a bash shell, when you're logged in as the normal user; use the commands "login" and "su"
"su" stands for superuser, which is gonna give you those nifty root-privs.
