iMac, 96 mb harddrive,OS 8.6
Recently, when I am starting up, the icons load, then I get the watch that doesn't do anything (hands don't move), and the screen stays that way for about 10-20 seconds. Then all my desktop icons appear and all is well. Is this an indication that something is wrong, or about to go seriously wrong? Any help would be appreciated........Audone

Nah.. everything is fine.... just sounds like a bloated desktop file. No big deal.

The desktop file keeps track of things you do in the finder basically with time it can get large slowing down startups and occassionally causing other problems like icons not appearing correctly. But it will never do any major damage. You need to rebuild it every once in a while.

— Quick tip... if you ever have problem on a software basis with the OS, rebuild the desktop first to see if that corrects it. —

The best way to rebuild the desktop is with Tech Tool. Click here to go to Micromat.com and read up on Tech Tool (http://www.micromat.com/a_enter_ad/main.html) There is also a free download of it at that link.

If you don't feel like messing with Tech Tool you can rebuild the desktop without any special software.

Simply hold down the Command(Apple key) + Option key while the computer starts up. Keep the keys pressed until the Finder loads and you get a message box reading something like "Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop? This may take a moment." Just click yes and wait for it to finish.

I really suggest TechTool though. It works much better than the built in OS version.

You should rebuild your desktop every so often. I generally do it about once a month or if I notice delays like you mentioned.

Hope that helps. Let me know if it doesn't.

Thanks Buzz......every once in a while I tend to forget the simple basics and look for the serious problem. Will use TechTool as you suggested. I have the applecare version, but have ordered 3.0.2, which will ship in about a week and a half. Thanks again!! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Is 3.0.2 out now "already"? I have 3.0.1, although I prefer 2.5.4...

I'm back....but only by the skin of my teeth!! After DT rebuild, I had a major system crash......leaf record, nodes, catalog B-tree, you name it, it happened! Had to do a reinitialization, then restore ALL from RetroExpress backups (zips). That in itself turned out to be a nightmare.....55 executions couldn't be done. The result is that I am having to reconfigure most everything....was up until the wee hours of the morning, and back at it 2 hours later!! Certainly don't think desktop rebuild had anything to do with the crash.....suspect it was just lurking there for me! May need to be in touch with a million other "little" problems!! Audone

Hey,

Just incase you're interested I have now added a Mac section to the downloads page - and it will grow http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

TechTool is one of the free downloads available http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif (all downloads on the site are freeware)

Wow! Audone! Sounds like a mess! I wouldn't suspect the desktop rebuild at all either. What do you think the culprit was? What were you doing when it crashed?

Mishy. I guess I need to keep up to date what's in the mac download section huh? http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I am really having trouble here.....I used to have the CyberTech page that had the wonderful glitzy banner. Now I have a dull blue background with childish grey printing where the "NICE" banner used to be. Even clicking on cybertech help under Mishy's signature doesn't give me the right page. What am I missing, doing wrong, etc?? I am running Netscape 4.75.

Mishy....sure don't want to offend anyone (especially you!), but the horrible green 'slice' that runs down the left side reminds me of seasick people! And everything gets shoved over to the right, so you're forever using the scroll arrows to read.

This has not been the best 24 hrs. of my life....I've learned alot! cursed alot! and cried alot! But just when I thought I was coming somewhere comfy I got the shock of my life...anyway, hope things get back to NORMAL (whatever that is!) real soon. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/confused.gif

Buzz, I wasn't ignoring your question intentionally! When my world caved in I had been reading the forums here, went to have dinner so left my machine with the screensaver running as usual, and returned to system bombs, freezers, etc. So I really don't know what caused the crash!

Audone

None of the above Buzz.....temp in the 20's Fahrenheit....no lightning, but the snow did fall for awhile in the afternoon! As to the power surge....only the gods above will likely ever know what happened! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yes I agree. The scolling to the right all the time does tend to get old. When did this all happen anyho? Once one reads :

Then you don't really go into those that often much more. When DC changed there pages I thought about changing my monitor control panel settings. I didn't because I like the way they are set now. I can just about go anywhere with very little if any problems.

It seems to me that its just a waste of space to have the green strip on the left like that, But
that is just my opinion of course.

Audone!
I wish I had an answer for your [nightmare] , but I can't for the life of me even think of what
could possibly do that kind of havoc on such a magnitude. Sorry.....

Buzz I'm having trouble with the colours holding in PS 5.5 "among other things". It seems
when I choose a color for text or whatever, many times it reverts back to the previous
color that was chosen.I've dumped the preference "PS/IR" with no results, etc. So I've come to
the conclusion that it's ME whose's the culprit.
http://pages.hotbot.com/photo/palws/images/Buzz.gif

That is question two. Question one you've already answered. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Just think.....98 more to go, then on to chapter two... http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

http://homepages.go.com/~palws/gifs/Bill.gif

btw...I had to use gifbuilder to finish off that img of ps. I can't seem to add layers
in ps/ir. That will be question three. I've gone into those links.....?...

Scrolling to the left....

I have tested the site in Netscape and in IE on resolutions of 800x600 and 1024x768 and I had to do NO scrolling on my crappy 12" monitor !!!

The green bar I understand is a take it or leave it think. But I like it.

As for the board integration. Bill not everyone comes here to talk just simply on the General Discussion.

This site was and still is fundamentally a tech site. The General Discussion side is an add-on which has become very familiar to us all now.

" I have tested the site in Netscape and in IE on resolutions of 800x600 and 1024x768 and I had to do NO scrolling on my crappy 12" monitor !!!"

First off...I could care less about the scrolling!!! That was just my opinion on what I see at my end.

Here is what I see....because you seem to be SO upset about my opinion. This first one is
at 1024/768 (http://homepages.go.com/~palws/10243A768.jpg) without opening the
window to full screen "left just anough room (1") on either side to view apps, etc.
This second one is also 1024/768 (http://homepages.go.com/~palws/10243A768_1.jpg) only I opened the window as much as possible. I don't know about you but even though it format is jpg, one would have a hard time trying to read either of those windows.
This third one is at 800/600 (http://homepages.go.com/~palws/8003A600.jpg) with
the window wide open again with no room to view apps, etc.

Now like I mentioned above, to me its not that big of a deal, just something one has to live with. But sense you seem to take my opinion as if it was a personal attack aimed right at you for some reason . Well I don't know what to tell you Mishy?!? I really can't see why you've gotten so up tight about an opinion or if you care to call it criticism. Whatever.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"As for the board integration. Bill not everyone comes here to talk just simply on the General Discussion."

I have no idea what you're talking about there, not a clue. I do believe I'm in the Mac forum am I not. Fact is it's been a while sence I've posted in the general discussions. Yes of course my post "about PS" should of been in another forum, although at the same time I was thinking about that mac problem "Audone". so "killing to birds with one stone" sort of.

Anyway Mishy, if for some reason you feel that I'm out of line for giving an opinion, well I
guess I'll be seeing you.

Bill

Hey now, am I gunna have to moderate the admin? LOL http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Just kidding!

The sites fine. Anyone who disagrees just has to live with it. Everyone's going to have a preference for one thing or another, you can't please everyone all the time.

Bill, I'm going to start a new thread to answer your questions.

MishY

Bill,

I'm sorry dude. I honestly wasn't trying to get at you - or your opinion. I think you misunderstood what I wrote (which I understand could easily happen because my post didn't explain thoroughly enough). I am sorry.

The site has been a huge stress to me as you know.

My post above was not because I don't want to hear peoples opinion - but because I wouldn't have minded a few days rest before facing the flak if there was going to be any about the changes I've made. It's just I suspected a few people might not like the UBB integration so I was how shall I say it ummmm nervous as to members reaction to say the least.

I was really hoping for a positive reaction to the new look, and with the exception of yours and Audones comments it has overall been that way. Not that in any way am I saying anything by that because there are always going to be a few that don't like something whenever it changes, and they are entitled to their opinion as much as any other.

The stress just got too much. I wasn't lashing out at you or Audone or anyone. I was just obviously too blunt in my post.

The resizing thing I'm working on at the moment, and within a day or 2 it will be fixed so you can see your apps and still see the boards without any scrolling http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif To be honest I've never seen anyone use their windows in a way you do which is why I hadn't tested that.
