Hi
Buzz if I went out looking for a MAC to buy what would you suggest I look at. Nothing fancy just a basic machine to start with, and something that is at a future date upgradeable. Or if I was looking at a used one what should I stay away from. I hope I put this in the right way for you to understand.
Now this is no joke, I have been thinking of doing this for a while. I like new challenges and this would be a really new one.

Hmmm.. not a joke huh?
Well......okay.
Top of the line are new G4 dual processors. But that may be more than what you need. If you are looking for something that you can tinker with and upgrade later I would suggest staying away from the iMac. Sure they are cute and upgradeable but the towers offer a more options.
If you are looking used I'd stay way from anything that is not a G3 or G4. Even a beige G3 instead of the Blue and White ones are good machines. Although all the other models are great they aren't as fast and you will undoubtably want something more if you by anything other than a G3.
I'll do a bit of research and come up with some specifics for you.

Hi
Thanks for the suggestions that you have given already. I didn't really have a dollar amount in mind at the time of the first post, but now that I have thought about it say in the 900 dollar range. I would want to start of with a basic machine just to get my learning curve up to speed and then upgrade as I learn more and add more programs.
Sory about the joke part, but sometimes I think you believe I joke around to much.
And again thanks for the infoyou have already given.

No problem with the joking thing! LOL
Well PowerMax (http://www.powermax.com/) Offers some good deals for factory refurbished machines. They currently have an open box G3 400 64/6/DVD for $999. That's a great deal.
I'm still looking though.
Other than auctions you're looking at around $1k for a refurbished tower. You can go with an iMac for a few hundred less. A lot of people swear by their iMacs. Personally it 's just not a route I would take.

Hi
Well I had a look at what you gave me and it all seems interesting. I am going to take a look around town here as there is a Mac dealer here. I would like to go in with a little information so that I don't seem like a real dummy. I have seen a lot of MACs offered in the paper, but not knowing what I was looking at I never took the plunge. I now have more of an idea what to look for.
Thanks for the help.
BTW when I get one you probably will have a lot of posts in here when I first get started.

LOl.... could use the posts here Frosty! LOL
Just stay away from anything that doesn't have a G3 processor or better. If you hear "68040", "68030" DO NOT buy that!!!! LOL You'll probably want a minimum or 32mb Ram as well. Those are pretty much minimal things.
Beware salesmen will push the iMac.

Hi
Just to keep you posted Buzz, There was a Mac dealer around here a while back but went looking for him and now I don't know where he moved to. I have found one more dealer but I don't like them, for various reasons. The first dealer I know I could have trusted to get what I want. Don't worry I have not given up, will keep searching.
