It would not boot up w/ 7.6 software so wiped that out and reinstalled org. software 7.5.1. I can get it to boot w/ the CD if I hold down the alt, command, shift and delete keys but only when I do that. If I hold down the shift only to turn off ext. it gives me an error "floating point coprocesser not installed, to temporary turn off ext. restart and hold down shift key"
which of course I did that when I first booted up. But, then when I'm able to boot doing the first thing stated above I am not able to remove the CD because it says I can not remove the start up disk programs are running. I have tried to go to the control panel and change the start up disk to the HD but it still saye the same thing. So, any help? Thanks again.
Oh, BTY you can delete all the other topics of mine if you want, unless you think I can get more info.

I need your other topics to keep up with what you are doing. If you want to be helpfule jsut continue to post replies in this topic instead of starting a new one.

Anywho....

At this point I'm really leaning toward hardware issues. If the FPU isn't being recognized that's serious. The FPU is built into the PowerPC 603 chip.

All I can really suggest is to read through this: http://www.lowendmac.com/tech/x200.shtml and see if anything stikes a familiar tone.

One possibility on the FPU is that in 68k emulation mode, the PPC chips actually emulate an 68LC040 which is a 68040 minus the FPU, so perhaps you have some really old software trying to run in 68k mode?

Well Buzz.... I've tried and tried everything I can possible think of or read about. I got the FPU problem fixed, but now something else has popped up. I GIVE UP!!
I'm trashing this computer and its software. I'll try to save for another one.
Thanks for all your help!

Maclost,

There's no reason to trash it yet.

Confirm that you've done the following....

#1) Booted from an OS CD or Floppy and initialized the hard drive. This means completely wiping it clean.

#2) installed the OS from the CD/Floppy you used to initialize the HD.

It really sounds to me as though it's all a software issue, not hardware. Are you installing the OS from Apple factory disks?

If it doesn't work then. All you may need is a drive. which is much cheaper than another Mac.

Hi Buzz I just got this E and as I'm reading this I am finishing w/ the info you posted. I had tried this before, but I thought I'd do it again. I also did a norton util. disk exam and it found some bad blocks which it fixed. So here I am. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. I hope that I can get it to boot from the HD now. Thanks
Oh, it is an apple factory CD

WellBuzz, Did all that stuff you said to do and the computer still yon't bootup w/o holding down the shift option command and delete keys.

I get system error occurred (bus error
to temporarily turn off ext. restart and hold down shift key (this does not work ether)

When I do it says "extensions off"
so then I tried disk first aid from performa CD it said it had erors and fixed them.

So then I tried restart and it said as before
"floating point coprocessor not installed to temporarily turn off extensions hold down shift key"

So of course tryed that again and nothing.

So booted w/ the shift, opt, com, delete keys.

So what do you think HARD DRIVE?

If so would a HD from a 6100 work on a 5200?
Is there a test I can try to see if it is the HD?
Also I tried that web site you told me about but the person E'D me back and say he could not read my mail and to trun off my HTML.
I don't know how to do this can you tell me?
I'm on a dell 8200. Thank You

Can't help with the Dell email thing....

But yes at this point I would say the HD may be bad. The HD from a 6100 should work jsut dandy in a 5200.

5200's are all-in-one computers. Our school bought one and had all kinds of problems with it. The Apple folks said, that they had had " a quality control " problem with those computers. I have one that works fine. You may have one of the bad ones. The Apple folks fixed and upgraded the school's and it lasted two years and began to smoke and burn around the top. You can download a program that will check your 5200. Make sure you have plenty of ram thats working. I fresh "clean reinstall" may be the trick. But, ... .I don't trust 5200's without a thorough check

Thanks Blue. I have tried a restall serveral times and a HD wipe. I did call a local Mac repair person and he said it sounded like one of the memory chips sound bad. He said to take one out and see if the problems is still there, if so put that one back in and pull out the other one. We did add memory to it at one time and that chip may be bad. So when I figure out how to do this I will. So can anyone tell me how to do this?
Thanks
