I have an old Mac (Quadra 600;7.1 Operating system) and a new PC (Windows XP), and want to convert files. I've done this by opening the mac file, going to save as, and selecting Word for Windows in the dialogue box, and saving it to a floppy. Then I transfer it to the Dell, open each one and save as a word doc.
It works fine, but is very time consuming. Does anyone know if there's a way to select all the files I want to convert do it without opening each one and doing the "save as" thing?

Hi Jean, welcome to CTH :)
Are you using Apple File Exchange to transfer the files to PC floppies or are is it accepting a PC floppy when you put it in automatically?
Are these files originally Claris Works files on the Mac?

You can try just adding the .doc suffix to the files instead of opening each file.
It's sad to hear the darkside has gained another soul. :(

THanks for replying Steven and Buzz!
Steven, I have an extension on my Mac called PC Exchange; is that what you're asking about? I just put a floppy in and then save to it....some of the files are Claris works, but most are MSWord
Buzz, it was kind of you to reply, especially in light of the grave disappointment I've caused you ;) I'll try the .doc thing. If it makes you feel any better, I'm currently having a real glitch in Windows XP/Word in trying to save these and other files :p

Buzz's .doc tip is the way to handle the Word files, I was going to suggest getting hold of Pc Exchange if you didn't have it, but as you do I won't ;)

Tha ks Steven, I'll try it. but now I have to come out of the closet and confess I'm not much of a techie. Do I get it right that I just go into a folder and add the .doc extension to every file? Does that automatically turn it into a PC file?

Jean,
Most of todays larger applications are basically the same on both platforms. The PC needs to have the .doc on the file so it knows it's a Word file. All you should need to do is add .doc to the file in the Macs finder (like you posted) and it should open in Word on the PC. I would test this first on a couple files to be certain. but it should work without a problem. i've done the same thing for several files and it's always worked for me. I can't say I've actually done it for Word though.
