I must admit I am impressed by the LACK of "Help Me!" messages for Macs. I would like to edit home movies. Should I get a Mac, and which one?
(open the floodgates now please Hal)

In a word, yes :D
If you have a firewire aka IEE1394 aka iLink port on your camera, it just plugs in, and the iMovie software is pretty good. If it's not firewire you can get USB capture devices.
Be aware that Macs are in a transitional period from MacOS9 to MacOSX which is a pretty major leap, like from Win 3.1 to Win95, not all of the major applications are OSX native just at the moment, the main thing that falls into this category for you would be Adobe Premiere, but you can dual boot (that's the default set up), and OSX has a compatability mode called Classic, but it doesn't work with everything.
As far as I know, any current Mac would do the job, the new iMac with the LCD screen on an arm looks very nice :)

My theory on computing.....
PCs for statistical data, science calculations, databases, etc...
Mac for anything audio visual. They are designed specifically for it.
Now it's not set in stone but in general most audio/visual software is coded to run on the Mac then ported over to the PC.
The lack of help me threads here is probably due to the fact that most problems can very easily be sorted out on a Mac (classic OS).
