Just checked 'about this computer'. With absolutely nothing open, staring at the desktop, it says OS is using 51.9 MB. Is this reasonable or have I got a problem somewhere?

Am getting my memory upgrade this weekend or early next week, so am still sitting at 96 MB. As soon as I open Netscape I start to panic about having no memory left!!

Do you have VM "virtual memory" on to one meg above your 96 = 97 ?

It's all relative Audrey. The larger your hard drive the more memory the OS may take up. An alias on a 3.5" floppy will be less than 2k but put the exact same alias on a zip disk and its 4k.

My system takes up about 43mb on a 6 gig HD. If you have a 9gig or larger HD then I don't think 51 is a lot.

You may be able to weed through some of the OS features if you don't use them and trash them. Things like TV mirroring, Video mirroring, USB printer sharing if you aren't using those feature you can trash the extensions, controlpanels and preferences related to them.

Now that is something I didn't know Buzz.!.
Let me get this strait..I've got a ten gig HD and last year (around oct.) my OS was reading about 44 to 45 mb. sense then I have added many extensions (about 12 to 15) that went with programs etc. Control panels one or two. Same amount of ram. Now the OS is at around 47 to 48 mb.
Forgot.. now the HD is half full as in oct it was 1/3 full.

I've been thinking of doing a house cleaning of my apps and programs which I don't even use. I could most likely dump or stick in a zip six or seven programs etc with the exts/cps etc. Actually to me it doesn't matter to much cus of my ram but to Audrey with 96/97 for now ?...maybe sooo ?

Learn something new everyday. Who said ya can't teach a old dog new tricks.. *grin*

yeah. the amount of background things you have running will add to the OS memory in the "About this Computer" dialog. Many extensions and Control Panels run in the background and you never know it. So at one moment your OS could be taking up a few megs less than it did just 5 minutes ago.

I check mine occassionally. If I've haven't installed anything new and I notice an extremely dramatic jump in size then I go looking for what's running that's taking up so much memory. Often it's just a backup or virus app that's running silently.

There really isn't a whole lot you can do about how much RAM the OS is using other than eliminate some of the OS features, which could cause problems or conflicts.

I think OS 9 recommends a minimum of 32 mb OSX will be 64 mb minimum. So anything ibetween the two is pretty acceptable for OS 9. At least that's how I look at it.

Nooooooooo... trash the PC the planet is plagued with them!!!1 http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Faster, I don't really remember it's been sooooooo long since I had to do a fresh install. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif Mac's are stable that way. I think the standard install is around 20-30 mb. Minimum install is about 2/3 of that. On a Mac you can simply update system components with the new system releases. You don't have to reinstall the whole system. You have that option but 9 out of 10 times int's unecessary. Not sure if that's an option with windows.

Currently, My platform system folder (Which contains all the operating software) is at around 430mb. But I have quite a bit installed.

No Bill, I don't have VM turned on.....it seems to make things wonky...kind of feeling like you're underwater. Nothing is crisp and fast the way I'm used to with it off. Checked again today immediately on startup and it says 47MB....will keep an eye on it to see what it does as the evening passes. My HD is only 4GB, and about half full I think ( a couple months ago anyway).

My System Folder is 310 MB!!! I thought I had weeded through 9.1 fairly well, but will go through it again this weekend...bet there's stuff there I can dump!

Thanks for the input!!! http://audone0.tripod.com/Smilies/bow.gif
